Either way, if a settling cue is missing, they will still eat, molt and grow....so the end result will still be big larvae..

Besides, if the pleopods aren't completly developed like you mentioned, they arent ready to morph...
I mean the 1st pair of pleopods is less developed than the others, both in L.amboinensis and L.boggessi (see pics in this thread and in http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...5&pagenumber=1
And the endopod of 1st pair is rudimental, poorly developed in the last zoea of both species.

The endops are shorter about 80%,but much narrower, about 30% than the exops. They won´t develop further in the larva. But they show what I believe is an AI (appendix interna).

Andy says that the presence of AI and setae all around define the last larval stage.
And my larva matches Wunsch description of the last zoea of amboinensis,at 120 days.

Therefore,I think my larva is in the last stage but perhaps has to hang around and grow a little more.

Your statement that a larva not finding settling conditions will keep time marking and growing,is seductive albeit not right.A larva that fails to transform will die. There is no shrimp neoteny. You won´t get a peppermint larva the size of the giant larva of amboinensis.

The 1st pair of pleopods is just like you said..but it wont have an AI nor AM..the coupling hooks will appear on the tip of the endopod.

Well, I am not saying that the larvae will grow forever...but it won´t die either..

Pleopods of the 100 days old larva.

This is a close up of the pleops, showing the appendix interna.I had more pics, but my disk capacity was over. I asked for some more space...

They said no
So we won´t have more pics till I find a place to keep them.

The larva molted again,at 105 days.It seems it is molting every 5 days.

I had a peppermint shrimp hatch get mixed in with a clown hatch once.
Was really cool watching all the different stages of development of these shrimp.

120 days!

My larva molted today,at 120 days.It keeps growing and is now huge, over 20mm.It has to be very close of meta.
According to pleopod development it is in the last larval stage since at least 30 days.So is it stage bumping (marking time)?
Perhaps not,and the natural evolution of this particular giant larva undergoes very subtle changes, hard to see,so that "sub-stages"or "micro stages"occur with each larval molt.
Having just one larva I won´t risk it with more microscopic examinations, just some full body portraits. But I will try to document any changes by inspecting the exuvia (molts).
But I am seeing some changes in the colour markings.Red spots in the tail exopods became double and then like a strip.Tiny red marks appeared in the legs joints.and now some red shows around the eyes.

I can´t hide that I have strong hopes that this larva will make it,and that I will be very disappointed if it doesn´t.See how 120 days of working with it hang from a string, that´s the evil in this game!

Hydroids show again and again will move it to a clean tank.So far this is working.

Thanks,Yes,I always get some sarcastic comments from lfs owners. They can only understand profitable numbers.
But if I can put one soldier on top of the mountain,1000 can follow, right?
This is the sort of things hobbyists do while commercial breeders would never mess with!

How true

How true.. when cutting a path you always start with a small opening.

That is about as deep as I go.

I hope to be following in your footsteps with your 254 peppies and then onto Redlines.....
But we will see how things go.
Keep working and I will keep supervising and encouraging
Cheers

This is how the 107 days zoea looks.Notice the well developed pleopods (swimmerettes),the forward pointing A2 (antenna)with very narrow bands, and the upside pointing and forked A1 (antennula),with wide bands.

Looking good Luis. Somehow I can't figure out why Lysmata amboinensis larvae always seem to do better when they are raised singly. Any thoughts?

Well, perhaps continuous bumping and avoiding the others could be an extra burden. They are supposed to be alone in the ocean.Just guessing

Would it be possible for somthing like this to work as a tank to lessen the numbers of larva that are together in a single area.

Well,so far it is only a possibility,I could raise hundreds of L.boggessi cramped in a small tank. But I imagine something like your sketch for especially aggressive/valuable larvae(Stenopus, reef lobsters),even to house post meta juveniles.

Smile Success at 143 days!

Gosh!I am now a member of the very exclusive (less than 10 members)club of L.amboinensis breeders! My giant larva settled today into a huge post-larva (PL).
The PL is so big that after next molt, when it becomes a juvenile,it will be a commercial size shrimp. So a six month growing time from hatch to sale,is not really that bad,it is about the same time clowns need.
The shrimp is gorgeous (to my eyes at least ).Colour marks are very different to those of the adults. It swings sideways like peppermint shrimps.
Fulfillment feels great! If this was an Oscar and I had to produce a boring thanking speech,I would have to mention many people, many of this Forum, who helped with advises and copies of scientific articles. But I have to give special thanks to Andy R.(Spawner)for his continuous assistance and substantial practical support.
Next step is to raise lots of them and watch more carefully those last stages.

Luis, I'll admit, I was touch and go with this thread. I peeked in only rarely. To hear this great accomplishment is WONDERFUL. Maybe I should pay more attention, eh?
