Ive got a Glock 20 .10mm and LOVE it! I also have an M1 Garand and an M1-A both have been switched to synthetic stocks to lighten them up a bit and both are great fun to shoot. They dont, however, hold a candle to my Remington Model 700ADL 30/06 bolt action rifel with its synthetic stock, bi-pod and Leupold scope, by far the favorite of my collection, I have way to many to list!
Welecome to the 2nd most expensive hobby of your life!!!

Get an M1 and get it from the CMP. It'll always be worth more than you paid. They have a brick and mortar store where you can hand pick one off the rack at Camp Perry which would be an easy drive from Canton, MI. Make sure you use the expertise of the techs there. I always stop and chat and tell them what I'm looking for, and they've been good to me. I look at the muzzle condition first and foremost. Stocks are cheap to replace.
They've got excellent sights a good trigger (~$40 worth of labor will get you an amazing trigger). Ammo is cheap and plentiful--the CMP has mountains of Greek surplus which is pretty accurate stuff. And NOTHIN' beats the *PING!!* of an empty clip. I'd advise highly against buying an M1 from a gunshow. They're always overpriced and fraud is rampant. The chances of finding an $800 paperweight are pretty high. A good portion of the servicible ones you'll find are CMP rifles with a marked-up pricetag.
