ok question of the day
I just made my frag plugs this week, can I just go ahea an put a few in my sump say 5-10 to get some coraline going? I am having low pH peoblems anyway... Is that the main prob? will my skimmer take out the "scum" or any other stuff that would be bad? also, just setting up a frag tank, can I throw a few in there now too/ nothing in it yet but water!
THanks
Kelsey

Depending on how large the system is, a coupel could be ok. The thing you have to remember is that there is going to be some nasty stuff leaching out of these plugs. I would try the mesh bag in the back of the toilet box for at least the first 2 weeks. The skimmer probably is not going to remove all the stuff that leaches. Tot he best of my knowledge skimmer do not alter PH much or take out phosphates.

Can you post a picture of your plugs. I have been thinking about making my own and was wondering what shape you made and if you used a mold of some sort

rockdr,

I've read elsewhere that part of what's being leached out is essentially kalkwasser...

I'm not sure what else leaches out of mix, but I do know that every 4-5 days when I change the water in my bin of oystercrete rocks, there's an oily film on top of the water before I do the change.

Either way I'd cure 'em in freshwater beforehand just to make sure... while they're leaching stuff out I doubt anything would grow on them anyways..

ok- I will just wait then. can you say-over anxious!

here is a pic of the plugs. I ended up making about 250! I was'nt planning on making that many. I used Portland type 1 and crushed coral only. I used the small Dixie paper cups as the mold and just pushed the goop in with my finger. they came out of the molds very easily and I also did that so they will sit flat on the eggcrate in the frag tank. I got a pack of 600 cups at Sams for about 3$.

thanks for all your help guys

I use egg cartons for the molds on mine... I will try to remember to take some photos when I get home.

Rockdr,
Yes, patience is a virtue that not many seem to have. Heh. I'm only a couple weeks into my rock curing and already getting ansy to do something with them. :-)

BTW, I assume you used gloves when handling the mix? My first batch I did with bare hands.. Oooooh did I regret that the next day. My hands exfoliated quite nicely. :-) Heh.
