Cool.

It's good to know that morph is being passed around.

Here's a frag of RandyO's red and grey I picked up several months ago from a semi local reefer.

The centers have a lot of orange in them. I may try moving it up in the tank to get more grey...

This thing has exploded in growth. It took a month or so, but then it took off.

Okay, having just picked up a couple small colonies, I'd like to know the techniques everyone uses to frag these out. I can't seem to find any instructions anywhere, and the pictures simply look like slice and dice for the most part. I've got what I believe are a lord and an echinata colony that I'd like to share/sell/swap frags some at some point. If anyone can fill me in a bit (so I don't end up with a pulpy mess on my hands!) I'd much appreciate it.

Also keeping an eye on the "club" here, as I'm really starting to see some color morphs of these guys I like a LOT!!

Hey gflat,
As the polyps get a little bigger, they will grow into the gray color. Usually juvenile polyps are more red/pink/orange, but as they grow larger they get the gray center.

Here is a piece that had grown into a mini colony so I cut it up. I kept a small chunk that had some polyps that had just encrusted onto this piece of rock.

April 05

Here it is in June 05

Those pink centers will be gray in a few more months. I chopped that piece up into 5 frags in June. I wish I kept one piece to grow out again. That piece was about 6 generations off my original Red and Gray Acan. My original piece was 3-4 generations off the wild mother colony that came into captivity back in 2000.

Thanks for the info, Randy. I think the frag is about six months old (have to check my log to see exactly when I got it), so it sounds like it still has some growing up to do.

These are great! What is a common name for these? I am not familiar with them? The colors are incredible!! I like the large fleshy polyps.
What kind of care do they need (lighting, water flow etc)

Every time I get on this site the more I find out how little I know

Most of what is shown here are Acanthastrea lordhowensis, but there may have been some Acan echinata/subechinata. They are certainly an interesting coral. The large fleshy polyps and feeder tentacles that look like they want a finger (and no less) are a definite draw.

New Acan

I'm fairly new to acans (veteran sps guy) and just picked this up today. Can someone help ID? My camera blows but the color is close. They don't appear to be fully open yet but have been in the tank for about 4 hours.

The only other coral I have that are similar are a couple of micromussa which I've been trying to target feed. How often should I try to feed acans?

Helloo all, i would also like to join the club. I have recently just purchased my 1st acan frag and currently learning the ropes. I've read the enitre post and I must say NICE PICTURES to everyone. These are very easy creatures to fall in love with. I am currently addicted to rics and zoas as well. Great another reason to work more overtime, just what i needed!!

Yeah I am turning to the darkside of acans and LPS. My tank is not good enough to host those colorful sticks. So I figure I would play host to some acans and other softies.
