I have a large...well OK a GIGANTIC UPS that I can use for around 5 hours. After that, I am at the mercy of tracking down a gennie.

I've said my prayers to and performed ritual sacrifices to the Giant Flying Spaghetti Monster.

What more can I do?

We have a generator enough to run some powerheads and the TV and plug a freezer in once in a while. We have a woodburner in the living room that will heat the upstairs and I can always sit a pan of water on it for heated water. Last year. we went one week without electric because we were in the country. It was definately a mess. Reminding myself to get a can of gas after work.

Battery powered air pump and I have some of those hand-warmers that I place inside a cut 2-liter soda bottle and float in my tank.

I have been looking at those Guardians, they are LP or natural gas powered and kick on automatically when the power goes out. Kinda pricey but will keep the whole house going.

How are the roads where you all are? It's starting to get slick here. Hopefully it'll blow over quickly, and there won't be any power outages.

Pleasant Hill is somewhat slick, but it is more ice balls coming down. Not to bad for Iowa during the winter.

Nice coating of ice here. It's stopped raining/sleeting for the time being, but the temps are dropping, so what's not frozen now, soon will be! Supposed to get more tonight and tomorrow, yuck!

Well, the trees we planted this fall are all covered in about an inch of ice, and leaning really bad. We went out and tried to break as much ice off as we could, but it's not looking good. Man I hate ice storms...I'd take a blizzard any day over ice.

Had a 3 hour power outage earlier, but everything is fine with the tank, since it wasn't powerless for very long.

A most appropriate thread for this time of year. Yesterday we lost power at 3pm just as I was reading GIRS. After an hour, I was starting to get frantic. My husband tried to tell me there wasn't anything we could really do and that the tank survived the 12 hour power outage last Feb (when he was home and I was stranded in a hotel room trying to get home from the Rockford Frag Fest.) I told him that I was very lucky that the tank had survived that 12 hour outage and that I couldn't just sit and do nothing. There was at least a 1/2" ice covering everything outside and the whole town of Galva was down. Last Feb the whole town was not affected. Against my hubby's advice, I got in the car and drove to Kewanee (12 miles away) and bought a 750 watt inverter from Wallyworld.

When we got it hooked up, the power was down for 5 hours. I ran my car for 20 mins every hour and was running my 3 powerheads and the return pump and heater. We had a propane heater in the living room too (for us, not the fish!) Last time I checked, the tank was holding about 68. We got our power back at 10 pm. I was one happy camper (literally ha!)

Everything seems fine today. I am counting my blessings and feel safer now that I have some form of backup. It worked pretty well and cost about $65.00. The smaller units plug into your cig lighter and can be bought for 35 and 50 I think.¼/FONT>
