If you want long-term these aren't a good choice. Very few people can keep them over a few months alive with constant feedings.

I had one in my sump for a few years, unless you are target feeding them with live foods or you have a massive sand bed (impossible in a 30g) they won't last long.

1. Try to place it in dark place with a good, but not blasting flow - in a well-lit place algae may start to grow on the chili and it stops to open.
2. Feed, when it opens to be fed. If during the night - try to make some continuing feeding for the night time. 3. Food size - less, than 800 micron (cyclop- eeze and smaller), zooplankton and substitutes. IMHE, better dry or frozen, but not the bottled food. 4. Protect from bristle worms - check time from time, if they take residence within chili's branches. 5. Some of the chilis resent being hanged upside down - but you will see it, and will have time to change that. Chili will live for a months, being closed, without feeding. If you will have possibility - try another tank, and if conditions are of its liking - it will open to feed, if nothing happened. You will have to filter well and skim water, because of amount of food, coming into closed system. The coral will tolerate not the best water, but try to do what you can. It may be coincidence, but if you will ever have red slime, flatworms, dinoflagellates, or the bristleworm, smashed by pump - run carbon, it helps. And I have phosphate removing media all time in the sump. Alkalinity is 10 dKH, SG 1.026, 77-78F. Good flow is a must (IMHE). If you chili will reliably opens for a feeding for months, without closing for a months - post for all of us, this is a problem. Good luck! |
