In general, I have been concerned about interferences and calibration. I have not used one, however, and do not yet have any first hand knowledge.
Lou Dell of American Marine has kindly sent the Pinpoint model to me, and I hope to do some tests in the near future. I let folks know when I find something out.

No, I do not believe that it is possible to monitor alkalinity in such a fashion, as it is not a thing in the water, but rather the mathematical result of an acid titration.
However, a direct measure of bicarbonate would be just as useful, and may someday become available.

Interesting Randy...Do you think that this monitor will become confused with all the other salt ions floating around? what kind of electrode does it come with, platnum? Is it one that need to be cleaned off with some steel wool?

It is an ion selective electrode. The technology has been around for a long time, and is very useful for some ions, even in seawater (fluoride, for example). Whether a calcium selective electrode can be calibrated adequately and be selective enough is what I hope to investigate. Lou Dell of Amercian Marine obviously thinks it can, and he may be right.

No, most people would pay that IF they could afford it. Way too steap IMO.

No, you just have to make it a habit to check it every so often just like other parameters so you know where you are.
