Sensitive fish alert

Sensitive fish alert

An animal rights group has called on one of the largest aquariums in the United States to stop serving fish to its visitors, likening the practice to grilling up "poodle burgers at a dog show".

"It's easy to think of fish as swimming vegetables but of all the places in the country where fish should get a fair shake it's an aquarium," said Karin Robertson, manager of the Fish Empathy Project for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Ms Robertson sent a letter to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, near Los Angeles, asking directors to take fish off the cafeteria lunch menu, adding: "Serving fish at an aquarium is like serving poodle burgers at a dog show."

She said that recent studies showed that fish were surprisingly "intelligent, sensitive and interesting animals" and that the aquarium was contradicting that message by cooking them for lunch.

Aquarium president Jerry Schubel said that the facility served only sustainable and environmentally friendly fish and was committed to educating the public about conserving ocean environments.

I'm torn between hating PETA and agreeing with what they said...

The Aquarium of the Pacific serves fish that is farm raised and is trying to raise awareness about eating farm raised sustainable fish. It's darn good stuff too.

PETA as usual is causing alarm over nothing. If they protest I'll be eating sushi in front of the aquarium wrapped in raw cow. Maybe I'll throw harbor seal toes in there as well.

People might take PETA serious if their over zealous moronic loud mouths had brains and knew the whole deal not just the parts they want to hear. If PETA had their way all fish would be vegetarian too. Fish eat fish right in front of their 'relatives' (schools). What difference is it if we chow down on popcorn shrimp. None. PETA can't find any other causes to try to get in the news about.

I agree, PETA is a joke. They could actually do something useful, if they used some common sense and decided to respect the fact that not everyone grazes the backyard when hungry. There are plenty of worthwhile causes for them to take up, and sometimes they do. For the most part, anything good is far outweighed by the moronic statements that they issue forth every time someone grabs a burger.

I'm starting to get hungry after all this fish talk... I might go diving for lobster tonight... Anyway. I think it would be great if on their "pacific ocean" display they have a small caption that says "For a closer incounter of these fish, please visit our cafetiria" Just to **** off PETA.

PETA must be right! we shouldnt eat seafood at a seafood restraunt....and none of us reef keepers should ever eat shrimp cocktail again! those who own, or live on animal farms shouldnt be allowed to eat steak, beef, eggs, pork, beacon etc.

common now folks, I think this whole thing is silly

So do they protest feeding the fish to their sharks? Well I guess they could switch to feeding them poodles.... That avoids the whole conspecifics issue..

Shrimp, if it were up to peta we would all have planted tanks as it is also "wrong" in their eyes to keep fish in captivity.

If you are ever up for the Curator position there let me know. I'll put in a good word for you

I don't want a plate of whatever your avatar animal is. It looks like if it's less than well done it might bite back!!
