In the UK we call those types of filters Huey Hung. Follow the link for more details.

Huey Hung

There might be a different name over there.

David, doing well. How long before the pairs start laying, especially after a move?

Thanks

Steve

Look how much they grow in 21 days!! The ones on the left hatched 04-10 and on the right 05-02. OK maybe that's 22 days, my bad Anyway not bad for 4 and 7 week old fry, eh? There are another (estimated) 300 or so comming up 11 days behind these. Not sure why but it's definately a smaller hatch.

"Green thing" is a funky cube shaped airstone I tried, don't like it.

Since David is so far and he did not got to Imac and let the PB&J I made for him go bad he will have to learn the handshake later.

Snarkys, David has been doing the clownfish thing for about 2 years now, it is experience, he has no "silver bullet" for it, he has been through a lot of trials and tribulations, now he has joined the club.

lol not looking for a silver bullet, I'm just curious what he attributes his success too. you can just say time and learning or you could say what you actually learned over that period of time : )

maybe its some sort of trade secret that he wants to keep to himself and that's ok, but i didn't think it would hurt to ask. Maybe his experience could help others.

Everyone will tell you there is no secret. (except the handshake) Sure maybe we all have a different way of doing certain things but in the end nobody is doing anything you can't read about in the books by Frank, Joyce and Martin. For me I think the breakthrough is routine. Routine, routine, routine... followed by more routine. When I had the first large hatch people asked what changed. I thought long and hard about that and came up with this: What has changed is that nothing changes any more. In the beginning you constantly struggle to improve, testing and tweaking and altering things. Eventually you settle into a routine that is so automatic you can do it in your sleep. THAT is when I started getting the nice hatches

I think it is because of Spring, yeah, that's the ticket!

Large hatches mean that many can die off and there are still a lot of larvae.

I've been getting big hatches too, and I've only been doing this since September of 2005. My fish started laying early in 2006, so they are not pros yet, but lay large nests. Who know why it works so well all of a sudden? I just keep crossing my fingers that it will keep up.

Hey Ed, nobody made me a PB&J!

Me either!

Congrats David, I think I know what you're saying about the routine thing, although for some reason I want to agree that spring has something to do with it(!) -- it was too bad you couldn't come to the IMAC

I have lost more of those than the previous hatch, not sure why. Maybe around 390 left. The next group is at 24 days, looks to be about the same number, maybe a little less. Then there is a group just 10 days behind them, again similar in size. Finally there is a new hatch on their second day today. I'd say pretty close to 2000 in all including the older hatch and about 120 I have almost ready for sale. Then I have maybe 400 tomato's as well, plus 2 more nests to pull this week and the female oc is looking fat, it's getting crowded down there.

I would say you are having some success there, David!

I was just revisiting some threads on feeding these guys for the best color. Are you still feeding cyclopeeze heavily? Did you try Otohime? I like many things about Otohime, but I don't like the color it is giving me.

Well you should try a tanning bed...

For the fish, pump them with cyclo or this:

I use the first one when I want to impress a costumer a few weeks before shipping. As sole food 3 times a day.

The other one you put it in the food, I have not use it, they should be able to guide you, basically you mix it with the oto

You can pay for Nature Rose (or whatever they call it), pay even more for the crap that Ocean Rider sells (vibrance I think), or just get pure astaxanthin from Jehmco for about 1/10th the price

I just feed frozen & freeze dried CE daily as a regular part of the diet, color is exceptional. Yes I do use the oto but cautiously, I don't like the fact that it sinks so quickly, waaaaay too much waste. Remember my "baskets" have screen bottoms.

Anyone using Zeigler? Does it sink as well?
