Yup, Jeep still makes the 4.0HO for the wrangler...great motor. I know Ford used to as recently as the mid-90's but I'm pretty sure they don't anymore. I can't remember when Chevy stopped making their's, but it's been a while.

That engine really is one of the best ever made. For a little while in college I worked at an airport that had an old International fuel truck. I remember raising the hood once and saying, "Hey, I've got that engine in my Jeep!" I believe it was the first 6-cyl engine to have seven bearings in it.

Back to the topic at hand, someone told me that Chevy makes an I-5 for their new S-10s?

GM doesn't make the S10 anymore, they make the colorado, and I think they discontinued the I5. The Jeep 258 (upon which the 4.0L is based) had 7 main bearings. I know, I own one. Ford had the 300 (4.9L) sixer in their trucks until 1995 or 96, and GM just reintroduced the straight six for their midsized SUV's a couple years back. It's based on the VORTEC design and is used in trailblazers and their clones.

Something that really miffs me is that today, you cannot order a Jeep Wrangler with the sixer and a manual transmission. If you have the 4.0L, you have to have an auto. THe 4 cyl has a choice.

Aside from those, Ford, Chevy and (I think) chrysler all use V6's in their trucks nowadays. Personally, I like straight sixes almost as much as V8s.

GM is still making the new Inline 5 and inline Six cylinders. There have been some turbo'd versions showing up in hot rods already.

Those old straight 6's are great motors, closet thing to indestructable ever made. My favorite truck was an old '70 GMC. It had the granny low gear and a 411 differential, with those gear ratio's it could pull down a house

You wanna see a cool straight six, have a look at Pontiacs from 1966 to 1969, installed in Firebirds, tempests, etc...

Our 67 bird had one originally. Check out a company called PMI on the web, they build performance parts for them.

The motor was designed by Delorean.

You mean the OHC sprint motors? As I recall, their architecture was almost identical to the standard 250...with the exception of the OHC design.

I've got a 67 C10 with a 250, 3spd column shift and 3.73's in the pumpkin. Yeah, it's pretty strong. Sucks that it maxes out at 65ish though. Currently, that truck is stripped to the frame to be sandblasted and redone.

Yep, the OHC motors. First 2 yers they were 230's , 68 and 69 were 250's. Cranks and such are the same as the chevy.

They were the first production engines to use a Quadrajet carb. On a 6!

Had a 77 Ford pickup with the 300 straight 6. I hated that truck . Got lousy gas mileage, didn't have any acceleration, and in the winter the engine never got warm enough to heat the cab ( lived in Mn back then).

I've got a Ford 300 in an 84 F150. That truck has had the hell beaten out of it by previous owners. What isn't rust holes is dented. The 300 in it has a total of 8 psi of oil pressure when warm and idling, and about 25 on the road. It maxes out at 75 mph...if it's flat with a tailwind.

However, I love that truck. It's only 2WD, but I've pulled out stumps with it, and have loaded it full of wood (at least 1500 lbs) and it keeps chugging. One time, we had to get a bunch of castoff bricks from the street department in town to pave a walkway out on our property. For the heck of it, dad counted the bricks we got, weighed one and figured it out. He figured that we had 2100 lbs in it (more or less). And it still did 65 down the highway in overdrive.

They might not be too good on acceleration, and they might not have much horsepower, but they've got it where it counts.

Ford has the Falcon 4.0 VCT Turbo I6...But it would be a waste of a great engine to put that in a truck.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the 4.0 was ixed this year...and all Wranglers have the 3.7 in them now.

I had a 77 and an 88 Ford with 300 straight sixes in them. I'll agree about the gas mileage, but the had enough torque to pull any load I put in them. I had the opposite problem with heat, both ran hot.

I hated the 77 only because it had a three on the tree. The 88 I still miss.
