Paraguay - Mystery Fish With Hands And Feet

http://rense.com/general69/walkfish.htm

Sorry had to do a quick cut-copy-paste on this one but I had to due to how freaky this thing looked and short on time, but had to share it with others.

That's freaky as hell... is that a hoax?

rense.com looks kinda like a conspiracy site, and ufology is "the study of UFO's". Also, I wonder... looks almost like a squid grafted on the head and maybe photoshopping? Is there a formal science journal reference rather than just something on the web?

Yes, this is a deep sea animal. It's kinda old news, but it is legit. No photoshopping. I'll see if I can find a scientific site for you.

Okay. Here's a RC link; on the third post are a couple links about the 2 creatures shown in the first post. They showed up after the tsunami. Hard to believe it was a little more than a year ago. Seems like yesterday, but also forever ago.

Thanks for the link, Scarlet (looks like it wasn't after the tsunami or from Paraguay, but after the New Zealand research journey as redbean said).

That's really interesting, because I took ichthyology and did a short unit on primitive fish including chimaeras, but never came across one that looked quite so alien. This is what we were taught most chimaeras looked like:

Fish with legs are far from unknown. Like this gurnard...

And that picture they used for the one with hands and feet has been going around the internet in hoaxes for years. It was claimed to be washed up after the tsunami in 04, by the hurricane in New Orleans...

Funny how stories spread.

Check out this page. The truth is a lot more interesting.

Try again. Fishbase.org has been having some trouble lately. Close out the window and click the link again.

Also, in the link posted by mickey85, the fish include...

1: Blob Sculpin (Psychrolutes phrictus)
2: Pacific Spookfish (Rhinochimaera pacifica)
3: Fangtooth ( Anoplogaster cornuta )
4: Red Gurnard (Chelidonichthys kumu)
5:
6:
7: Prickly Shark ( Oxynotus bruniensis )
8: Scaled or Deep-sea Stargazer ( Pleuroscopus pseudodorsalis )
9: Umbrella Mouth Gulper Eel ( Eurypharynx pelicanoides )
10: Viperfish (Chauliodus sloani)

5 and 6 escape me, but I know them and have seen them before (not in person)

Yeah I know Scarlet already got to the .gov link. Spookfish are a kind of chimaera... just the strangest sort I've ever seen!

Three posts earlier I posted the link that shows the same pictures and shows where these fish pictures came from. NOT the tsunami.

Ah, but if you read the nano-reef thread, it shows that it is a hoax

Doh, I really wished I had seen that link earlier! That was some rough searching through fishbase to get what I got. But to complete the list.... Also, after copying the images URL, I see that they are named the fish.... *sigh* All that hard work for nothing.

Blob Sculpin (Psychrolutes phrictus)

Pacific Spookfish (Rhinochimaera pacifica)

Fangtooth ( Anoplogaster cornuta )

Red Gurnard (Chelidonichthys kumu)

Deep-sea Lizardfish

Oreo Dory

Prickly Shark ( Oxynotus bruniensis )

Scaled or Deep-sea Stargazer ( Pleuroscopus pseudodorsalis )

Umbrella Mouth Gulper Eel ( Eurypharynx pelicanoides )

Viperfish (Chauliodus sloani)
