would 2x250watt MH be too much for a 55 gallon tank? or should i just stay with 1x250watt?

No, that should be fine. I don't think one bulb will give enough coverage for the sides, you could go with 2X150W though if you wanted.

What about 2 150's. 2 250's would be alot of electircity ans heat. I got a 175 over my 30 and it makes alot of heat, I could only imagine two.

You would not necessarily need to have 250's unless you are wanting to keep SPS on the very bottom of the tank. You could get away with 175's or the double ended 150's. With it being 4 feet wide though, you would need 2 bulbs to cover that.

i got 2x 250's on my 55gal......personally i wished i would of went with 2x 150's or 2x 175's seems a bit much but i look at it this way i can grow/keep what ever i want now.... also corallife makes some dimmable ballasts so you can turn it down to like 183w if i remember right. but i ran just 1 bulb and it doesnt really cover enough of the tank...stick to 2 bulbs i found the brace in the center made a huuuge dead spot
