algae problem?
i have a 55gallon reef tank with all softies. when i started my tank i went through that brown algae bloom and eventually that cleared up with the introduction of a ton of snails. but now it's many months later and i am having a problem with a neon green algae that is covering things like purple coraline algae would. how can i stop this algae from growing, and control it?

Nuisance algae does not grow unless something is feeding it. The first question I have for you, is what is your source of top off water, and water change water?
Next question would be who lives in your tank, and how much do you feed?

there is a yellow tang, a manderin dragonette, a clownfish and a damsel. there are a few reef crabs, a bunch of snails and some softie corals that seem to be growing pretty quick. i feed the fish every other day either flake, or frozen food. i have an aqua-c remora with maxijet 1200. it pulls out a decent amount of brown skimmate each day. i feed dt's live phytoplankton every 3rd day and dose my calcium and iodine when needed. i do small waterchanges every other week. but what i was thinking is that i am not using RO water, just treated and filtered water. could that be the problem?

what kind of RO unit might you be able to suggest. i just need it to make me the water i don't need it to necessarilly put the water into the tank itself. lol what i'm trying to say is i don't want to spend a fortune on a good RO unit

My preferance when it comes to RO/DI is ARS honest, reliable company with top notch product and they stand behind their product.
Mention that you are an RC member, and they'll knock 10% off the price.

you need an ro unit because tap water is high in phosphates which encourage algae growth.

Tap water can change from day to day. WHat is acceptable for human consumption can very easily be fatal to our aquatic critters. I know of a Discus breeder here, on long Island that lost thousands of dollars in Discus one day, just because of something the local water company added to the water one day. Over time, you will invest a ton of money, even in a small tank. what's a hundred bucks, even two hundred in comparison? Consider it CHEAP insurance.
