Unhappy Sad, Sad, Sad.............

Went to an LFS while I was on vacation to Los Angeles to see there brand new 400 gallon shark tank, and I was impressed........until I saw their "sump". Their sump was filled partially with LR and about 3 feet wide, 5 feet long and about 16" deep.......and was inhabited by two 3 to 4 foot black tip reef sharks! These poor sharks had hardly any room to move around and they had a sign in front of them that said "Feed me for 1 dollar". Is there anything that any person can do when they see something like this??

WOW, talk about cruelty to animals! There is no excuse for that. I think a nice citation is in order for the store.

Did I guess right?

They have a horrible reputation on RC.

I'm not sure who still shops at that place, but their offenses extend way beyond keeping sharks in too small of a tank.

I shopped there a couple times. One fish I bought from there was dead in the bag when I got it home. They wouldn't replace it. One of the fish had ich, so we had to quarantine everything. (I know, I should have quarantined first). Within a week, it died too. They just have a bad reputation for poor livestock, and do not guarantee anything. Did you check out fragglereef.com? Next time you're in LA, you should stop by there.

You should call your local SPCA and report them. That is deffibately animal cruelty and is against the law.

yea its really sad when u see somthing like this. i visited a new aquarium with my brother this weekend, they had a great variety of fish but i was disgusted by the size of the tanks they were in. they had great long tanks but were divided up into tiny compartments. they had a large volitan lion that was being kept in a tank roughly the same size as it. the poor thing could not swim in any direction. i almost wanted to buy it out of pity. they had clownfish, damsels, firefish .etc and i think even a tang being kept in compartments of only about 300 mililetres of water .

Got a reply from the SPCA......

Dear Robert.
I have a feeling that the sharks are not meant as pets, but are only kept to sell for shark fin soup.
I am sure the shop management is aware if the extremely poor conditions for those poor sharks.
I would recommend using the SPCA/LA cruelty tip hotline: http://www.spcala.com/APS/crueltytipline.shtml
Here are resources you may site, to convince cruelty officers that this is indeed cruelty:

http://www.wetwebmedia.com/blacktipshark.htm
http://www.pet-abuse.com/cases/7222/CA/US/
http://www.pet-abuse.com/cases/2373/CA/US/

I can't find any fish rescues in CA. to lend a hand. I could only find these in other regions:

http://search.petfinder.com/search/s...=&location=+ca

Thank you for your compassion and concern. It is too bad that you don't currently live in the area, as you and a handful of reef fish enthusiasts could get together and picket the shop. You would be well within your rights, and this has proved very helpful in other pet shop neglect cases.

There's another thread about the shady business practices at ATA.

It's an all-around bad place, and everyone should boycott them.
