Someone was asking about the DSB in a bucket.
Here is a good bulkhead to use:
http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/.../8600/cid/2009

1/2" and 3/4" work great.

These are great for this installation. They are very tight and produce a good seal. Also, low flow through the bucket is key. You need just enough to keep the water moving and particles suspended. I Tee these off my return line, not off my overflow lines, as you want particles to settle in your sump, not in the bucket.

These work great in aquaculture facilitues as you can link as many 5 gal buckets or other containers as needed in a row. You can date the lids, producing a LS production factory + as cheap filter for your corals. Then sell the sand as livesand after a few months use.

They make regular bulkheads that have a radius on the seals, but they are expensive and have radius requirments. They sell them at water tank supply companies and are normally designed for use on a specific tank. I have never seen one that will fit a 5 gal bucket myself.

Yea, I hope so too.... Hey, here's a question for anyone using a Phosban Reactor... When adding the Phosban ( or any other media for that matter ), do you just put the stuff in loose or do you put it in a filter bag then into the reactor?? or does it really matter one way or the other..??

Bob

I just put the stuff in lose, but, I run 3-5 gallons of tank water through it before actually running it in the tank. I then add 3-5 gallons of premade salt water back int the tank. Tiny water change I guess.

Does it have to be reef-related?

I tried to think of some useless info, but then realized that when first getting into the hobby a lot of "useless" info was really pretty useful to me ... Someone else will have to really start this off.

Apparently I'm useless ...

Okay, how 'bout this --

Did you know that Smokey bear ("Only you can prevent forest fires") came from New Mexico.

Oh yeah, and Billy the Kid is supposedly buried here too.

I'm sure Marc may chuckle at allthis at first, but after a few pages of it he may ditch the thread all together.

I wouldn't worry about Marc ditching out on us. People did the same thing to my thread over Thanksgiving. Didn't bother me. Just people being people.

I put it in loose since you need to have the flow rate slow enough that the media doesn't even move (phosban media and rowaphos that is). Then top it off with a few inches of carbon.

If this is your first time using phosphate media then start with about 25% of the recommend amount of media. If you drop the phosphate levels to rapidily you may shock the corals (so they say). I'd imagine it is the zooanthelle that has to adjust to a food source being cut off.

That is interesting. I never knew you could run carbon and GFO in the same fluidized reactor without separating them with a sponge pad or something. Does the carbon stay completely separated from the GFO since it is larger and lighter? I wonder if it also helps to keep some of the "dust" from the GFO from getting out of the reactor.
