I went to the dentist

My wisdom teeth started to come in awhile ago but were not bothering me.

But over the last few weeks they have really started to grow and the bottom one has been causing a lot of problems the way it was growing in.

I went the oral surgeon yesterday for a consult. My lower one was impacted and like I said growing in at an angle which happens to be under the molar in front of it.

So long story short, there was no apts until the begining of the year but with the chewing problems and what not I need to be seen.

So they pulled all three last night..

Needless to say, I have never had a tooth pulled, or a root canal or crown or anything..

There is just something wrong ripping someones teeth out.

They had to break the bottom one in 5 places to get it out; I can still hear the cracking and grinding of that little machine..

Ick.

So its your fault! I have a really bad tooth right now that I need to just get pulled, yesterday it was really acting up. I lasted until about noon then I had to take some meds to dull the pain. Unfortunately we won't have the money to get it pulled until March since nearly ever dentist around here won't even accept new patients and the ones that do its several hundred to pull a tooth and they require you to pay up front.

I'm not sure if I should be happy or frightened!

Your dentist doesn't involve a door and string does it?

Hattie: Yeah, no thanks to your mothers turkey. I broke a big chunk off of it while eating!

I think it was like $300-350 or something last time dad had to go get a tooth pulled here.

Its unbelievable how hard it is to find a dentist to even take you, it took mom several hours to find one that didn't basically tell her to get lost when she mentioned he would be a new patient .

You can drop 4000.00 on dental work so fast----I was lined up to take flying lessons, back some decades ago...and guess where the money went.

But well spent: it's lasted.

No wonder dentists are so hated. They charge you a fortune to torture you.

This is a great reason to be in the military: free dental and medical. I have to pay some minor copay for meds for the family (mine is free) and just a tiny amount monthly for their coverage. I get surgery and dental stuff taken care of very easily.

Back in high school I had to have all 4 pulled at the same time. The bottom two were impacted and causing problems.

This, after chewing on blocks of rubber for a week or two trying to get them to break through the gums..... I think I would have rather my father "fixed" another ingrown toenail.

My father learned what seemed like advanced interrogation techniques as a backup medic during wartime in the 70s, so that he might one day come home to practice them on his children.. both saving money, and teaching his offspring valuable lessons.. like what a pain threshold is. The real problem was that my brothers and I gave him plenty to practice with.

Anyway, The doc put me under at my adamant request to remove said teeth and although I do not remember much of it, my mother to this day laughs to the point of tears when she tells every new person I bring home the antics of her semi-conscious son while trying diligently to recover from anesthesia.

I now avoid the subject of dentistry when in the presence of my mother.

I hate it when they break the teeth inside your jaw...the most horrible noise ive ever heard. My oral surgeon was a butcher! I had 2 people holding me down one was holding my head against the chair and my mouth to keep it open while the other one leaned on my chest with all of her weight. The doc injected me between the teeth, in the gumms and a few other places then he grabbes his knife and says "Can you feel this?" As he jams the knife in my gums and pulls it back...i heard it click when it hit my back tooth...luckely the novicane kicked in really fast. Then 2 days later I had a root canal on the other side of my moth...the next week was hell...the vicodin didnt really help at all and I kept smoking so I kept sucking the blood clots out, I ended up getting sick from swollowing so much blood... I didnt get the crater from my extraction sewed up, did you?

Yes, very nice to have all those benefits plus no tax while shopping on base. But they won't pay for braces though...at least when I was in the AF.

They still don't pay for braces. But luckily noone in the family needs them right now.

Get me a bottle of very expensive whiskey and a pair of pliers. I'll have that puppy out in no time.

Ya, I did. They put a few sutures in the bottom one..

it's so swollen, there is just a lot of pressure; feels like my right side of my face is falling off...

So now, who's fault is that????

Come on people...take some responsibility for caring for yourselves (not just to be picking on you, Dave).

I've been practicing dentistry for 26 years (OMG... he's rich!) and I have patient's who have work in their mouths that I did 25 years ago that looks nearly as good as the day I placed it. Why? Cuz they practice very good oral hygiene!

I also have patients for whom I've done work over and over and over again through the years. They've sunk gobs (medical terminology, there) of money into dentistry - unnecessarily! Why? Cuz they refuse to stand next to their toothbrush - the same one they've had for 3 years so they know what it looks like (even if they don't know where it is just now!). And they've never spent a dime on dental floss.

But they all b**** about how expensive dentistry is!

If it was free, they'd b**** because they had to come to the office for treatment!

If I went to their house and did it free they'd b**** because I didn't bring a bag of Doritoes with me!

And they still wouldn't brush much, or floss at all, or eat a respectable diet, and keep smoking(or chewing or dipping or rubbing). And it would still be anybody else's fault but their own that their oral health is crap!

I've instructed patient's on proper oral hygiene technique until I'm blue in the face. I even tell them that good oral hygiene will save them a lot of money in all the dentistry they WON'T need because of it. I tell them good oral health will improve their general health. And in 99.9% of the people it makes NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER!... in one ear, out the other!

Did you know that uncontrolled periodontal disease may cause you to develop heart disease that otherwise you would not have gotten? Well, probably so! Conclusive evidence is not yet in, but just wait a couple more years. Will that fact make any difference in how you care for your oral health? It certainly should...but it probably won't! Do an honest - HONEST - assessment of how you care for yourself... what kind of responsibility you take for yourself... before you complain so much!

Everybody wants the easy fix! Nobody wants to take responsibility for themselves and put a little effort into their own health. (You wanna lose weight but won't control your diet or get some exercise. That's just too much work. Too much personal sacrifice -- dammit, I like Doritoes! Just give me a pill, Doc!)

I guarantee you... absofrickinglutely guarantee you... that if you exercise excellent oral hygiene you will have VERY little need for any extensive dental treatment. If you need braces... blame your mom and dad (or the mailman, or whoever was involved). You need your wisdom teeth out - well, join the crowd, nearly everyone does - tell Darwin about it. Be thankful if you can get them dealt with while you're young. (And do it. Putting it off until you're 60 is just stupid, and more dangerous)

Oh, and btw, it's posted in my reception room: Simple Extraction is $90. If you pay on the day of treatment the cash discount brings it down to $75 (sorry, I don't take credit cards, black market cigarettes, or live free range chickens in trade - but I'd give serious thought to a few bottles of a good Cabernet).
And, if you go home and smoke and end up with a dry socket four days later - I do that treatment for free.
