Question watanabe angelfish

I bought a small watanabe/watanabei angelfish around labour day, around 2.5" it's doing really well. My question is, that I'm having a hard time finding a single male for her, would I be better off getting another female, and seing if one will change sex?/ or would it end up in a territorial war between the newcomer and he watanabe that i've had a few months???
Some say the colours aren't as nice when they change in captivity/ and or that if one fish does not assume the submissive role/ dominantrole, that abattle is inevitable

The other thing is about time frame issues as this resident fish has been in the tank now a few months and is already not taking any crap from clowns/ tangs/ hawkfish..etc.
Any thoughts..
Thanks in advance
Chuck. Detroit Mi.

Hey chuck,

I am jut tagging along because I would like to find an answer to your questions as well. Just curious, do you keep any other dwarf angels with this wantanabe? I know dwarf angels are territorial amongst each other but since these are a somewhat different, do you know if they will get along better? Also, is yours aggressive or just not easily bullied? Sorry for all of the questions but I am curious about these fish. Sounds like you have a nice tank too.
Take care,

Rafael

Chuck...I have a female watanabe and actually ordered a pair originally. However, it is my understanding that a male can revert to a female even as a pair. I canceled the male and jsut got the female because of this. As for adding a male now, that might be risky. In term sof a dwarf angel, I added mine after a coral beauty had been in my tank and they haven't even noticed each other.

I had a male/female pair and made the mistake of adding another female...the female was just a hair bigger than the male and beat the crap out of him till i caught him and put him in my 135.. the male eventually reverted back to a female and the larger female is just starting to turn into a male..... so now i have 3 females with one seemingly to change into a male.

As far as issues go with aggression i have the pair in with a r/s regal and a golden dwarf and there are no issues what so ever.

The single female in my other tank is kept with a emperor angel and a potters and there are no issues

If you add 2 females the dominant one will very likely change to a male. It's a cool transformation to observe.

No, I am not keeping any dwarf angels with this watanabe. That is primarily the reason i got this fish, is due to the fact that all of the dwarf angels I've kept in the past, bothered the corals..eventually, except for an african flameback. It became carpet anemone food!!!
The watanabe angelfish is not so much agressive as it just holds its own when it neeeds to.
the nice attribute of this fish is that it has never even looked at or sampled a coral, they are planktivores in the wild.
It is a beautiful fish and i highly recommend one.
I will post a picture as soon as i figure out how....

Where is a good place to find Genicanthus sp. online? I haven't had much luck finding any on saltwaterfish or liveaquaria, the two "big" names, and none of the lfs around here like to keep them. Where did you get your watanabei?

I am very happy to say that i found an awesome male watanabe.
I got it 2 weeks ago, dec.17th at choice aquariums in Michigan. An early christmas present . They brought in 5 so i had a few to choose from. It was $100. and from Vanuatu islands. It kind of hid the first few days but now swims all over the tank, and it's really cool to see it interact w/ my female watanabe. The female i got at Tropicorium in Michigan in august for$50.00 it is still very healthy and active the are a nice addition to the reef tank.

Search the Reef Central article site- there is a great article that covers all of the Genicathus species. I read this article before canceling my "pair" and settling on a single beautiful Bellus female. Way too much sex changing in both directions to assure that you'll end up with what you actually want.

They don't necessarily change sex though it does happen. There is still no guarantee in keeping a single specimen.
I think this may be the article you are referring to http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-02/hcs3/index.php
