How to clean a protein skimmer?

I have a in sump protein skimmer and it is not skimming very much any more. What is the best way to clean your skimmer

I just use warm water and my fingers.

If it is calcium, I would use a vinger/water bath.

Also try to clear all openings where water and air pass through. Pipe cleaners and toothpicks are good for this.

If you have a large sink. fill it half way, put the skimmer in, mix vinegar in with the water and let it run.

I let mine soak in vinegar then wash with water.

I find the best thing for cleaning the soft crappy material from protein skimmers is one of those spongey dish brushes (they have a sort of dandelion or mop-type head.) from the supermarket. I don't use that one on the dishes!
