clumping sand?
I know it means something when your sand bed clumps and solidifies like a brick but I don't remember what. Doesn't it have to do with alkalinity, calcium and ph? I know my alk has been high from time to time, is that it? If any one can help i would appreciate it.

clumped sand
Hi caseyjones.
To my understanding what you have is an ionic imbalance, an abundance of some of your more prevalent cations (positively charged ions like calcium and/or magnesium) or an abundance of carbonate (negatively charged). The abundance of some of these ions will cause a precipitate, like calcium carbonate, and could cause a white hazed look in your water column or clumping of the sand. I would check your alkalinity and calcium levels. If you have trouble with the calcium level, your magnesium level may be too low. The safest and fastest way to correct an ionic imbalance is to stop adding any supplements, (if you add any?) Perform enough partial water changes, to bring your calcium and alkalinity levels into their acceptable range. I hope this helps you! |
