I have been running those shocks on my canopy for just over a year, and the only thing that shows any sign of rust is the bolt I used. I plan on replacing it soon.
I tried the toybox lids too, I could have made it work if I had 4 or more.

I bowed the wood for the stand and canopy by gluing 3 pieces of 1/4" plywood together over a wooden frame that has the same contour as the tank. After that had dried for a week, I built a square jig that I could clamp to the stand. The wood I used for the jig was thin enough to allow it to bend over the stand. Once I had the jig clamped to the stand, I used a rotozip to run along the inside of the jig. Doing this left me with one large door. I used the rotozip again to cut right down the middle, giving me two doors. After making all these cuts I was left with a 1/4" gap around the doors when they were put in the stand. I covered the rough plywood edges and door frame with oak veneer. This left me with less that a 1/8" gap around all the doors. Just enough to allow the doors to open.

I think the total cost for the wood and hardware was about $500.00. I've got a lot of oak in the project. It took me about 10 weekends to complete, but it was my first attempt at any type of furniture project and had no plans to go by. I made several mistakes that had to be redone. If I did it again, I bet I could do it in about 6 weeks.
