Egg crate is not really effective for most smallish jumpers.

Great looking wrasse! Do you happen to know its scientific name?

Blue pencil wrasse from Hawaii - Pseudojuloides cerasinus. Very fragile but seem to do better then the other pencil wrasses. I see yours has a busted lip (this is VERY common on these guys) hopefully he is eating and it heals or he probably wont make it.
nice male though

As long as he's eating well you should be ok. Keep an eye out for signs of infection over the next week or so.

It is very unusual for sand burying fish to do lip damage during transit. It is mainly do to being held in a BB system and they are relentless at trying to bury. To stop this (since i dont have sand in my holding system) i cup them with small holes. Usually the mouth damage isn't as bad or at all.
It is very common on all sand burying fish at the wholesale level. Hopefully the damage isn't to bad when the hobbiest gets it. Is it eating?? and most importantly do you have a fine sand bed? they dont have beaks - just lips

I had one that never ate. They are nice fish but from my research difficult to get eating. Mine slowly withered away.
Good luck with it.

it is tricky to get them to eat. Pencil wrasses IME/O are worse then leopards and tamarins at the shipping level and at the acclimation level. Lots of pods, lots of life and cross your fingers if you get some of these. If this guys eats and does well i suggest adding a pink pencil (female color form) to keep his colors and keep him happy

Thank you for all the great info on this fish!! Good news is, it appears the mouth is certainly getting better. Bad news is, I do run a barebottom tank. Concerning the eating part, he does pick at mini mysis, but he is not real excited about it. I do see him cruising the rocks and pecking at pods I presume. I do no thave any other obligate pod feeders, so, hopefully he can get some initial nutrition there while mouth completely heals.
Will stay on selcon in the food and so forth.

I've had one for about 6 months. It has been eating good the whole time.
I've been working alot of overtime lately this morning is the first time to see the tank in a week with lights on. I noticed that the Wrasse is beginning to loose it's coloration. Probably doesn't help that feeding has been sporadic during the last month because of my work schedule. |

Yeah, they’re pretty finiky. They like to stay on a strict lighting and feeding schedule. They’re just as hard as the more advanced pseudo-anthias, needing multiple feedings a day because they are so active. I’ve been pretty lucky with mine however he is a dawn and dusk swimmer so I don’t see it much. Feeding includes Cyclop-eeze, PE mysis, Hikari frozen spirulina brine shrimp

if you have a BB tank there is no way he will live long term. I suggest adding some sort of box of sand hidden somewhere. He will be much happier if he has a place to sleep at night
