Tank Temperature
I would like to get some feedback on tank temp. What do you keep your fish only tanks at? Is a higher temperature more acceptable in a fish only versus a reef?

Most Fish Only tanks are run anywhere between 74-80.
All depends on the species of fish in the tank. Chad

What are the effects of running a tank hotter? Like 83 - 84 range?

My fish look disturbed at 81F... 78 was better, but heater has setting only for 79F.

The reason I asked this question is.....Since adding my UV my tank temp went from 80 to 83. I am assuming it is due to the heat from the mag 5. I have been told by a trusted source that that tank temp is of no harm to the fish (within reason). I am not saying he told me 90 is acceptable but my 83 as the example. However the only time I may have a problem is during an extended power outage and by extended I mean 30 minutes. Something about the higher temperature reducing the oxygen level in the tank. If the oxygen level is lowered at high temps and your pumps are not working to oxygenate the water you will have a serious problem.

My reef tank stays at 76-78. Anything above 82, the fish freak. I had it go up to 90 with a heater malfunction... almost lost everything to oxygen depletion.

What do you mean the fish freak????? What do they do?

They start to get less and less oxygen the higher the temps get to it's like putting a plastic bag over your head. That 's the same reaction.

Well I kind of think that 83 degree temperature will not cause that. I think it will take a 90+ degree temp for any noticible changes.
Higher temps do decrease oxygen in the water but pumps and protein skimmers replace it. Again this is just my opinion. Now if you have a power outage with a higher temp tank you are more likely to have a large problem. |

My tank would get up to 85 in the summer when I had my old full reef lighting. The fish didn't care. Even when there were those two incidents when it got over 90, the fish were pretty much fine, and it was the corals that needed rescuing.
I'm not sure about year round, but if these are your temps for summer, other months could be cooler and you'd be fine. |

Thanks, That is kind of what I was thinking. But i would think that if 83 was maintained as a constant temp all year round that would also be fine. I am starting to think that only fluctuating temps will cause issues with fish. I have been doing a little interent research and everything I read tends to make me think 83 is no big deal. Granted ideal temp would be in the 79-80 range. But if that is not possible unless you add an $800 dollar chiller then 83 is no big deal.

83 should be fine. Your right that you will have a problem sooner with a power outage but 83 will not harm your fish. It would help to have an oversized skimmer to help get extra dissolved oxygen into the tank for your fish. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
