Frequency of Cardinal Spawning
I have a pair of orange lined cardinals (Apogon cyanosoma) that have just begun to spawn. This past Saturday night I watched the male spit out his first batch of larva after a week of carrying the eggs in his mouth. This morning I noticed his mouth is filled up with a new batch.
I was under the impression that the spawning cycle was along the line of a month and fairly uniform and predictable. Or are the cyles bunched up, then go through longer periods of no spawning? BTW, I'm not breeding these guys. I was just curious, because if this little guy doesn't get more of a break between carrying eggs, he's going to starve to death .... Jeff |

gestation depends on many factors, but it varies from species to species.

jeff- he won't starve to death, what happens is he will stop carrying the eggs when his survival is threatened. But yes if possible try to seperate the male from the female after breeding to give him time to fatten up.
Thats said, i believe i read that these fish breed about every 18-30 days, and they'll go thru fits-n-spurts of breeding
