drilling my custom tank
ok ive built a custom size tank out of 1/4 plate glass. 16x30 is the foot print. My question lies with drilling the bottom piece. i was looking at 2x 3/4" holes near the back corners and 2x 1/2" holes spaced along the back edge inbetween the corner holes. I have built a stand to supply a 1 1/2" lip around the bottom edge of the tank. so it will be open underneath. I just wonder how that will hamper the strenght of the bottom pane. I really don't want to break it fully loaded with water or rock. Can someone give me a heads up on something that i'm missing or is the pressure on glass only on the edges like they say.
for those of you needing cheato. give me a week or 2 to grow some.

If it is a custom built and doesn't have the plastic ring around the bottom, I believe that you have to support the whole bottom, not just the edges. In that case, cover the top of the stand with plywood and drill holes in the ply for your bulkheads.

ive tried that and i can't seem to find a perfectly flat piece of 3/4 plywood that im happy with. maybe ill take a ride out to a lumber yard instead of home depot or menards. cause all they seem to carry is crap wood.

I would use MDF with a really good coat of paint on it...cheap and perfectly flat, just not waterproof (hence the paint)
