Nano-reefs?

As I saw most of you guys here run larger tanks but I figured there has to be some with nano's. I have a 10g nanocube that has always been run with a sand bed.

From the standpoint of nutrient monitoring I've heard that running it without the sand is more beneficial to smaller tanks. Just checking what the opinion here is, I'm pretty sure I'll be taking the sand out unless someone convinces me (with some semblence of proof) that I'm a moron for considering it. Thanks.

well, a ton of debate on this one. some people like no sand so they can up the flow without sandstorms. i like it because it looks more natural (in my opinion of course) and i have a sand sifting goby who would be very disappointed without it!

as for nutrient monitoring, i have no idea.

I have only had nano-reefs, and I have always had sand beds. I like the sand beds because it looks much better imo.

i run 1x 10 w/sand and 1x w/o sand. i will say my coral grow better in the tank without the sand. i also have much less algae and gunk growth in the non sandbed then i do in the sandbed.

after about a year i actually started to"grow" a sandbed in the bottom of my non-sandbed tank. so i have started to suction this up every 6months or so.
i have a few gobies. but they have made their homes in a few well drilled holes in my LR. they seem to be happy.

imo i kinda like the non-sandbed. seems easier to keep everything in spec and it also has a nice reflective bottom pane. which makes everything so bright.

I was just planning on letting the coraline cover it or putting mushrooms on the bottom. Thanks for the replies though.

uh. how do you grow a sandbed?

you mean like pieces of your liverock break down and end up on the bottom as a coarse substrate?

i guess thats what happens. it is actually a really fine dust. creates a bad sandstorm if you distrub it. i just use a good turkey baster to sux most of it up. the deepest it has been is about a 1/4 in. around the middle of the tank.

yup detritus- the stuff people worry about being in a sand bed- only without the bed. I like Nanos with a inch of sand and moderate flow so it doesn`t blow around. the main reason for a bare bottom is being able to keep the pumps at a higher rate, thus keeping the detritus in the waterflow and thus removed by filtration. To me there is little benifit of high flow in a small system, and the white sand does reflect better than the glass.
