Octopus Pro Series "The Ultimate Octopus Skimmer"

Octopus Pro Series. These will be the ultimate in the Octopus skimmer line. I have been biting my tongue for a while when I first got wind that the Octopus skimmer line will be utilizing these pumps, and finally have permission to release the info to the RC community. All the specs and testing were given to me during the skimmers build/creation process. So here is what I know.

They will be utilizing Hagen pump motors "the same as the Red Dragon line" with custom designed volutes and venturi's. The reported results have been outstanding.

Pump are made in the U.S. and the body has all NPT pipe and fittings and these pumps were professionally modified by engineers. These new pumps are to be very reliable and efficient to run. No metric fittings to deal with.

They are calling the pumps Skim-Rite. The first skimmer CoralVue will be releasing is the Octopus Pro 250 with the Skim-Rite 1000 pump. It pulls 900LPH of air and draws only 30 watts. The pumps will have pin wheel impellers. In my opinion needle wheel/pin wheels are much more reliable and do not need replacing like mesh. The 250 model is 24" tall, has an 8" chamber and a 4" neck. The footprint is reported to be 8" X 12".

These skimmers look very promising, and love the look of the pump volute. You can actually see the massive amounts of air getting chopped up.












What does everyone think? I should be getting my own personal Octopus Pro Series 250 next week.

Last I heard the estimated retail price is going to be $450.00 on the 8" model (250).

I don't think so. I know that they are producing one with a 10" body and a recirc version. I am sure the pumps pull to much air to have anything less than a 4" neck.

Im also wondering the release date? And your source if you can disclose it?

Do you think there will be an external version? I was set on the Reeflo, but this may shake things up if they make a model bigger than the 250.

wow...the new pump looks promising.....
too bad theres no smaller ones....they should design a smaller version of the pump and then there will be a smaller version of the ultimate skimmer....haha.

Reef Specialty & Premium Aquatics for sure. Yes, in a way these are CoralVue's answer to the SWC skimmers. They have been working on the design and searching for the right pump for a while now though.

I am sure they are not getting rid of the Reeflo line of skimmers. The Recirculating version should be able to run external. The reported release date for the OPS 250 is early February.

You know its just to remarkable anymore how closely related all these skimmers look. These and the MSX's are close in design the MSX looks nearly the same but has a larger neck, it pulls 1300-1400lph. This skimmer pulls 900lph and has a 4" neck.....but its pump will be less likely to have trouble as like you said its a pinwheel. The price is 100bux more though. Still looks like another nice skimmer about to hit the market. Looks good, definately a BK KO!

A couple last things....sorry. I really dig the pump's but my nw200 is pulling 32scfh or 900lph as a recirc and it was only 200bux fully modded........The wattage is around 60though. So for this guy they put a much nicer pump on, less restrictive input to the body and a bubble plate. They modded it for you! Good stuff.

CoralVue prides themselves in quality products that function out of the box. This is the reason for them not utilizing a mesh style impeller. These skimmers will not require tons of up-keep and fiddling to maintain performance because of the use of the Pin wheel. This is most likely the reason skimmer companies like EuroReef, Deltec, Das and H&S have not jumped of the tread wheel bandwagon.

Everyone always complains that these lower cost skimmers have great bodies but crappy pumps. The Octopus Pro Series is the answer we as reef hobbiest have been looking for.
