Fragging Directly from Tank

Who sells frags of zoas directly from their tank & who grows them on plugs 1st? I have nowhere to store plugs (I really don't want a plug rack in my display tank), so I frag directly from my tank. I do guarantee them in case they don't make it--replace for same polyp or equal value.

"grow" is a liberal use of the word as many times I will sell them as soon as they have healed....

you might want to look into "pegging". its a great way to store frags in your tank without having to look at eggcrate.........

every coral you see in this pic is pegged....and the rock you see can handle 40+ more as it is riddles with holes.......

I will frag directly from the tank and then place them on a frag plug before selling... I make sure that after frag the zoas have opened back up and look ok before even thinking about selling them...

I won't frag directly. I want to make sure the polyps are not only healed and healthy but also firmly attached to the new medium. I hate getting polyps that have been freshly glued and just might come off in my tank. I've learned that lesson, at least once....lol

Can you hide a frag rack? I hid mine behind the rock with the green digi.

flyyyguy-Can you explain "pegging" and what exactly it is that you mount the frag to?

I rarely frag zoanthids in the usual sense of the word. My tanks are for my enjoyment and looking at chopped up corals doesn't fit into the equation. Instead I'll put pieces of rubble along the edges of a colony I want to control or frag. Once the rubble is overgrown it's cut loose from the main colony and replaced with a fresh piece of rubble.

It's not as fast (or lucrative) as chopping up a zoanthid colony but it works for me.

I recently had surgery & haven't worked in 7 weeks. I can't tell you how generous the local reefers have been--coming over & helping me with WC every week, feeding my tanks, cleaning bulbs & even killing aptasia. No one has gone home empty-handed & that's just the free stuff I've fragged.

I've made over $300 in that time from my tank (not just the zoas). It seems that the locals have gotten wind of the nice zoas/corals I'm keeping & are PMing me left & right for coral (mostly zoas). I don't have anything pre-fragged but I did put together a list of the more high-end stuff that they can look up at Zoa ID. Hopefully they can order them ahead, so I can get them on rubble at least a few days before they come for them. I was really getting concerned, because as soon as folks came over & saw my Pink Auroras, they all wanted them (can't blame em!) & I was down to about 3 polyps. After seeing Geoxman's full tank, I told my Hubby I wasn't fragging anymore. It's 2 weeks later & there are now 8 polyps! Is it the fragging or maybe the Vitamin C?

Also, I really love sharing my tanks with others...

its drilling holes into your main reef ........

then taking rubble, drilling it and glueing thin acrylic rod into it.

then you have removable frag plugs everywhere in your reef at every odd angle you could imagine that you probably wouldnt use anyway.

here is a pic of a seperate frag plug ready to be used to maybe better explain

I actually have large colonies suspended the same way in my reefs...just larger holes and acrylic rod...

flyyyguy thanks for the info. I tried doing something similar with frag plugs but the stem isn't long enough and they were always getting knocked out of the holes. I'll have to try your method.

Sounds like you've gone commercial. Please post appropriately in the future as a commercial entity. No selling or soliciting sales directly or indirectly.

Thanks for your cooperation.
