Bob, I'm so jealous! Pat, you too! Wish we could have done our whole tank in TBS. I feel like we're really missing out with only two rocks. Our sponge just isn't doing well.

Has anyone found that things that die off initially later grew back?

Condy is also in trouble- probably from our O2 disaster earlier in the week. She won't turn upright or anchor to anything and her tentacles are only coming out about 1/3 of their length. She reacted to food yesterday but couldn't hold onto it. Her color is still good, which is my only hope.

Peppermint shrimp are our mantis' meal of choice. Seems cannibalistic to me, which figures with that evil ba$tard!

I'd try uprighting that condy and let it attach to something.

Pat- as soon as I posted, I went back to the tank and did just that. I have her in a valley on a small rock and whether she's attached or not, she is staying there. I gave her the piece of shrimp and I think she actually ate it! I'm now working on getting all of the dead sponge scraped off of the rock- the upside is that it is revealing some great coralline...

Good, glad to hear it. Of course there's no guarantee she'll make it, but there's a much better chance on steady feet so to speak.
Some people have said they've seen sponge re-grow, so maybe you'll be lucky and some will grow back for you.
How is the skimmer working for you now? Do you generally see an improvement in the "looks" of the water vs what it was like when you posted the other day?
I'm sure with some water changes, and getting the water parameters back on track things will really start looking up and more positive for you.

Oh man, is that skimmer working. It is still in HOB mode (sump is getting plumbed as we speak) and the foam coming out the top. I wipe it off every so often and it feels like I'm changing a diaper!

Water definitely looks better- I ordered the Salifert lab and am going to the LFS for testing in a little bit. I'll let you know what the verdict is. Heater is completely off and we are running consistently at 79 with just lights and equipment. Hoping also that the sump might bring us down a degree or so.

We have something else weird going on with some of the sponge. It is a brown sponge and a few days ago, hundreds of little black spots developed on it. They almost look like a worm coming out of the sponge, but they aren't moving. They also look a little bit like eggs. Has anyone else had this?

Can you get a picture of it? Greenbean is really good with ID'ing things for us.

Unfortunately this is the best I can do. It's probably just dead sponge manifesting in a different way.

Dennis, I was really upset at all the noise coming from our sump area also. The gurgling and burbling of the air/water coming down from the tank into the sump drove me nuts. Plus the waterfall noise of the water draining into the sump. Even after putting the pipes underwater, we still had awful noise. This is what the sump looked like with pipes under water. You can see the volume of air that is getting into it. This is what is causing most of the noise.

I did that modification on the overflow noise post and made sure all pipes were under water. That helped tremendously. I also put the pre filter socks back on. That did the trick. Not only did if muffle the rest of the noise from the air, it also eliminated the micro bubbles from getting into the main tank.

As for you whistling noise from the skimmer, I wish I could help there. I know that skimmers take several days to a week or so to break in. You also might want to post on the lighting and filtration forum to see if anyone there can help you. I sure hope you get things worked out because once those noises are gone, you are going to enjoy the heck out of your tank! I know I do, and I was sure I was going to have to wear earplugs for the rest of my life!!

Thanks Sally. I'm actually considering putting a filter sock on but it makes me nervous because they trap nitrates. I am going to e-mail Aqua C about the whistling.

I have three sets of socks and change our socks every other day. Wash them in the washing machine with a cup of bleach. I first do a full wash cycle empty on the washer to get rid of any soap residue, then do a full wash cycle with socks using a cup of bleach. I then put them through another rinse cycle. This is per John at Fish And Other Ichthy Things. He does this daily at his store but said every other day would be fine for a home tank. We've gotten bad advise at a couple of lfs but I trust whatever John tells me to do. His store is immaculate and he has a fantastic reputation in the Tampa Bay area. Many people use filter socks just for the noise abatement they offer. They also trap all kinds of stuff. I have found a c. isopod in the sock, several bristle worms as well as a ton of icky stuff. It's a pita changing the socks in our fuge due to the modifications of the pipes and the limited area in the sump but to me the pita is well worth the noise abatement!!

We have found quite a number of new sponges growing lately. We have a brand new baby yellow ball sponge that just started on a piece of rock. We have several areas were bright yellow sponges are regrowing, some really pretty light blue sponges just starting, a couple of nice orange ones and a really brilliant white one. Yes, we had a bit of die off (or did it get eaten???)when we first put the rock in, but we are now seeing all kinds of new growth.

It's just weird how it was always 5, then out of the blue went to 4. Now back to 5. When did it go back to 5...today? I really don't know how RC works it.

Okay, want to hear something weird? See this picture where the sea squirts are up on top? Today when I was feeding, I grab the claw to hopefully get a crab out, and I put the claw right near the sea squirt, and it comes right off! It had always been loose, but I thought the bi-valve was connected by a thread or something. I guess it wasn't!
I'll have to take a picture of where it came off.

I don't want to take all of the credit, but I did realize this morning that I had never rated the thread- can't imagine that one vote would bump you back up, but if it did, I'm glad

Lossman, thanks for the encouragement- one of our rocks (we only have two) hasn't lost much at all except for where the gorilla attacked the encrusted coral thirty seconds before I yanked it out) and the other one has lost just about every bit of sponge on it. Good news- all SIX bivalves are still fully functional.

condy is looking much better:

and, we discovered the mantis' lair (dumb guy came out while we were working on the tank) so we know whereabouts we should locate the trap...

Arthur finally aquascaped our tank last night. When the lights come on i will take some pics. We still run our lights for 5 hours so we turn them on at 7pm so that the lights are still on after he gets off work so he can look at the tank with lights on. When he aquascaped the tank, he turned the big cave rock around and it looks like there might be a basket star in one of the holes. Its kinda to tell tho since all you see is the arms. Where we have our tank is on our dresser in front of the window so it gets sunlight while the lights are off. Well it gets the sunlight thru the miniblind.

We have to give Laura the credit!!
The condy does look better! Hopefully it stays that way.
Did you add TBS sand on top of regular sand? I can see different type sand in that last picture. How much total rock do you have in the tank now?
I seriously doubt the mantis trap will work. I think most people said the best way they got theirs out was to remove the rock it lives in and hope for the best!

Got part 1 the beginning of January, and part 2 the beginning of February. The camera is Olympus C-770.

I lied. We got part 2 Feb 11th LATE at night. 1/6 & 2/11.

Lori, do you have any algae problems with the tank getting some direct sunlight (even though it's filtered direct)?
