Dont mean to hijack a thread, but can any of you blasto experts explain how these corals grow?

I have a small bright red blasto, about the size of a golf ball or a little bigger.

Most of it is covered with heads already. There is a small spot on one side (lower right side in photo) that doesn't have heads yet. But my quesion is, given it's small size, will it actually GET BIGGER?? Or will the heads just finish covering all the open spots on and then that's it (ie. it'll remain about the size of a golf-ball).

It will keep growing new heads, and the colony gets bigger.

Chris: Are you trying to convince me or yourself. I can assure you these two are not red and never have been. I have had the common reds before just like Johns pic but larger colonies.

Um? What, its an orange plate that everyone is familiar with. THe saturation may be a bit blown out in the pic, but I would hope that most would have gotten the idea of what I was saying.

okay now a new question:
I have a huge bright neon pink with lime green center colony. I bought it when it was just a frag but it was attached to a green plastic plug/stick as many of you use for acros ( I my self use rock) but now it has grown into more than 120+ heads and grew in a golfball shape. How would I frag it with out damaging the polyps on the other side of the colony? I thought you layed it down and broke it apart with a chisle and hammer. But if I did that I thought I would ruin much of the one side of the colony.
Thanks
Kelly

Sounds like you have a blasto merletti. I have seen them frequently fragged and put on them little green guys.

In my area these all red ones arn't very common. Actually I have only seen one and I bought it. That was three years ago.

I usually see the two tone, green centers with red skirts. My LFS has one right now.

With merletti just squeeze in a screwdriver between the tubes and gently pull the screwdriver to break some off. You may need to use two screwdrivers and squeeze them in on each side faceing eachother, push with one and pull with the other.

Before you do this take a turkey baister and blow water onto the polyps so they retract, this way you are less likely to hurt them.

Pretty easy to do

It was $55 at The Frazer Zoo, in Frazer. It didn't look as colorful in the store as it does in my tank and it was labeled as Blasto. Frazer is near West Chester, which is about 45 minutes West of Philly.

it would take me a while to get their. Does the zoo normally have them? That's cool that the zoo sells live stock. Our aquarium doesn't do that.

It isn't a real zoo, just a pet store named that. I was confused when I heard of it myself.

lol, that's interesting. I think it would still be cool if the aquarium sold livestock. Do they normally carry blastos?
znut- that is a very very cool blasto. You did see purple much at all.

have you ever herd of blastos being dyed? I know that some times anemones are dyed to improve color, I didn't know if they did that to blastos too (sometimes)
