Circulation

I am putting together pieces for my new 150g reef. I am going to be primarily keeping LPS, but would like some SPS as well. I am debating return pumps, and was thinking of having 4 return pumps. 2 will be on at any given time. In this way I have redundancy in case of a failure if one pump. It will also allow me to time the pumps for differing currents. Each pump will go to a single return through a 3/4" line. At a height of about 5 feet, the Mag 9.5 says each pump will give me a flow rate of 750gal/hour. With 2 running, that is 1500 gal/hour or 10 times turnover. I also planned on having 2 Tunze 6000 Streams on a multicontroller inside the tank(with the decorative rock). My question is, does anyone think this will provide too much current for many of the LPS corals? Should I drop down to Mag 7, which will give a flow rate of 420 gal/hour for each pump? Or is that too drastic a drop?

I appreciate any and all input.

IMO I would have 1 return and 3 closed loops. You can get most of your flow from the CL that way you don't need 4 drains or really huge drains to handle the Returns. IMO i would use something a lot larger for the return and maybe the Mag's for the CL. Is this a standard 150g or custom? what are the demensions and where is the over flow. All of this info is needed to determine pump size etc.

Peace

The tank is going to be 60X24X24. I have not decided if I will have the overflow on the back in the center with 2 1.5" holes, or a box in each back corner, each with 1 1.5" hole. I considered closed loop, but have decided against it. The 2 1.5" drains are enough to handle a return rate of 1500gph, I am just wondering if that plus the 2 streams will be too much.

Thanks for the input Rob

That's only 10x turn over per hour. deff. not to much. I would really re think the closed loop idea. It is a much safer way to set up a tank. If even 1 drain gets plug or anything the more flow you have on the return the faster the tank would over flow. My buddy is setting up a 300g penisula style tank and he is only running about 600-800gph through the return the rest is all CL

Peace
Rob
