DIY in tank refugium

1st get a collection cup. like the ones they use in the pet store to collect fish. or you could use acrillic
2nd you will need a rio 50 pump.
3rd get a drill bit and match it up to the size of the outlet for the rio.
4th take your drill and bit and drill holes
(on mine I did 5 on both ends) making it look like the five on a dice.
next I put my pump in the center hole on one of the sides.

now your ready to hang it off the back of your tank inside of corse.
now fill with sand and alge.
next plug in your pump.

now you have an in tank refugium.
I will try to get you pic's

On one tank, I've been using an Aquaclear filter with the media replaced by sand and Chaetomorpha. On top is a fixture from a 1-gallon hex betta tank, with a compact fluorescent bulb. The algae seems to love the light.

On the other tank, I've been using a net breeder (without the plastic plants). I poked a few holes through the mesh so the occasional 'pod could migrate out. It's not ideal, but it's worked so far. On the other hand, I suspect that the net will eventually get clogged beyond my ability to clear it with a turkey baster.

I like your idea. Your system beats the net breeder because it avoids the clogging problem, has better flow, allows you to incorporate a sand bed, and probably makes it easier for the 'pods to colonize the rest of the tank. It also has an advantage over the Aquaclear, because your system can still "breathe" without the powerhead.

I used the CPR Specimen Collection Cup and the RIO-50
witch is 10.99 for the pump
and 5.99 for the cup.
bringing me to a total of $17.00 + tax and bam done
aqua touch I believe has both iteams maybe even some of the other stores. check around.

Thanks for the great idea, Ryan! Even the worst DIY guy (like me) could probably do it! Looking forward to the pics. Do you have any idea for simple hang-on the-inside frag racks?

you can use these for the same thing . but use the flow control that comes on the pump.

I took that idea and put it into a collection cup. so if you know what that looks like. imagine a collection cup with the same concept. easy to make.
