Canon Powershot Elph SD300

I LOVE mine. It is tiny (I keep it in my purse all the time, which is small), lightweight, and takes awesome pictures. Although that review says the suggested retail price is $400 I paid less for mine... I can try to dig up what site I bought it from if you like. I think my total was closer to $300 or $350. You can save a ton if you buy online rather than somewhere like Best Buy. I've been extremely happy with it.

Why don't you hop over to the Photography Forum and look around there. Folks are always asking about cameras on a budget over there. You will get lots of great advice.

As an owner of a Canon Powershot SD500 Digital Elph (the 7.1 megapixel model) I must say I am very happy with it. It's about $100 over the limit you have set out, but well worth it.

Also check out this website if you have not already: www.dpreview.com. You can get a great review of just about any camera and do side-by-side comparisons.

I also have one of those but use my fancier camera for fish pics. Actually, it is a great camera and I'm going to try the fish with it. It should be really fine like it is for regular photos.

I am looking at the Minolta Z6 and the Powershot S600, The S2 is a lottle more but also a top performer

Both the Minolta Z6 and the S600 have macro focus ranges of 1cm, while the S2 has a macro focus range of 0cm.

For around that price I like the Canon S2 IS and the Olympus Stylys 500...this camera can be bought with an excellent underwater housing and has two dedicated underwater modes...so you could actually stick the camera into the tank to take some pictures too . I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT but that's about 2x outside your price range. It was a wedding gift, I love it!
