Will Leather fraggin in my tank kill other corals?

So I fragged my green tree coral into 3 pieces, fragged the Kenya tree and GSP's. I have watched some of my mushrooms implode off off of the rocks, zoo's closing up and my zenia disintegrate has anyone else experience this?

Wow...sounds crazy. Maybe there is some major allelopathy going on in your tank between all the corals? Time for a water change!

it happens, acros will rtn sometimes and soft corals desintegrate.certain leathers have a powerful chemical weapon that is released when stressed or cut.the first couple times i cut leathers in the tank i had some loss.i now try to remove the leather before cutting.i would recommend using some carbon if you are not already.and do some weekly water changes.

I finally set up 2 additional smallish systems for fragging leathers and softies -- works great to frag only same genera of corals in each tank.

Did you cut the frags in the tank? That is the problem. Add some carbon to the tank. Next time take the coral out and place it in a bucket with some tank water. Cut it there and let it sit for like 20 minutes. Then you can place the frag back in th etank, but dump the bucket water...All the chemicals from the leather will be in there.

no wonder, I was wondering what happen to my sps dominated tank, they were all off color and showed some signs of stress (STN) few months back. I was like adding phosban reactor to bring down the phosphate, adding more Ca++ and Mg++, bought a BM200 skimmer trying to correct things, and did a lot of minor changes to the tank which further added more stress to the acros.

Now I know not to frag leather or softies inside the tank, because I did some massive cutting to shrink the whole thing and wasn't thinking about the chemical it would release.

i have had acroporas stn from cutting even other sps that are near each other.every time i do a large amount of cutting corals in general,i usually see some ill effects on neighboring corals.its like an occupational hazard.
