Do RO/DI units strip nitrates out of the tap water? My tap water has 20 ppm nitrates right out of the faucet (I actually use spider plants rooted in water in my freshwater tanks to keep the nitrates down). Would an RO/DI unit make my tap water safe for reef tanks, or is it such a nightmarish mess that I ought to just go with water purchased from the LFS?

(Note: I don't even drink it. I have a water service deliver. Yech.)

I would invest in the RO/DI, its a very good investment, and you wont look back. And yes it will reduce the Nitrates to 0.

Make sure you get one with an inline TDS meter, that way you can check to see if its working, and will indicate when the DI needs changing.

TDS will read 0, if its working correctly.

Get the ro/di. Before you order it talk to the customer service about using it for drinking water. You will need to spend a little more for the add on, but may save $$ long term. It can also be hooked up to the refridgerator ice maker.
