Anyone have a basement sump . . . under stairs??

I am planning on moving my sump to the basement, and the only place I can use is the area under the stairs.

Younglcy has a nice set up as shown in a thread he has going under the reef discussion forum.

Does anyone have photos from their under stairs sump, or of their basement sump?

that is what i have currently...my tank is in the basement also. i have my tank/then the stairs leading down/ then my laundry room and the sump ids under the stairs, so its just on the other side of the tank. b
benefits: i have plumbing in the laundry room, great for my RO/DI, laundry tub, and floordrain. plus lots of room for storage in there. less noise too.
cons: i have to bend over to work on the sump, plus i top-off manually and dose manually everyday. PITA. for me it works great for me.

Gem Tang- Your friend must have some long arms!! That is what I am afraid of, it getting too crowded. Thanks for the photo.

Poo-tang- I agree that the pros outweigh the cons. The biggest pro that I am hopeful for is that the temperature in the summer stays stable so that I do not need a chiller. That plus the noise reduction, a separate fuge, and a bigger sump convinced me to try it.

Rice is that light MH or mercury vapor? Watts? Usage cost? I have one like this in the garage not being used and never thought of using it.

I am under the stairs...



110 gallon fuge, skimmer, Sequence Hammerhead, 70 gallon RO/DI tank and 80A of power. It's tight, but workable.

Icant- You should get out from under the stairs!!

Do you have any pictures that show the entire layout? I am looking for additional ideas on how to lay it out due to the limited space.

here is what I had to work with when I was doing my 50G inwall:

So all finished it looked like this behind (and under) the tank:

my fuge is what was tucked under the stairs

I recently (over xmas) moved the fuge out from under the stairs..

I like it better now, as I can sit on the floor and stair into the fuge and see cool stuff and critters! plus its easier to work in, and closer to the sump...

Thanks for the photos. I hate to hear the fuge being easier to work on now that it is not under the stairs anymore. I don't want to cram everything in there to later find out that it is too cramped to work on things.

I could possiblyuse a storage area, but the stairs are right next to the tank and the area is otherwise wasted.

Good thing I am not in a rush, plenty of time to flip - flop.

well, what I did is I got a steel rack shelving unit and put all my gear on it, and under the stairs, just as you said, for storage. I am also thinking about building a stack of 20L's above where the fuge currently is....

You can also see how I had a support pillar to work around. Just to get at the front of the fuge, I had to go around the pillar... it became a pita
