DIY Light Possibility

I was poking around in a friends garage last night and stumbled upon 2 500watt flood lights they are SUPER bright and get very hot. I was wondering what you thought about using one or both of these lights for an aquarium. A bulb replacement would be in order, but that is no problem.

Any opinions PLEASE.

Thanks

Sound like Halogen lights, would be more expensive to run and have the wrong spectrum.

Spectrum and heat would be the biggest problem.
Prolly not a good way to go

the spectrum of halogens are actually better than metal halides, but aethesthetically, they are too orange. In other words a lower kelvin temperature, or operating temperature. Look here:

If for some reason you are set on using that fixture, look up something called the Regents Mod. Its just a way of setting up a halogen fixture to accept DE MH bulbs and hooking up a MH ballast.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I dont know how serious this is at this point but there is a fair possibility i might use some parts from these lamps. Mainly the housing and the glass plates that go in front of the bulb. Could these things be used with a MH bulb inside wired to a remote MH ballast?...

Use Roscolux #3220 Theater Lighting Gels to 'bring it up' to 10000K

You can get them for approx. $6/sheet (4 sq. ft.) on EBay.

That will strip out a lot of the red from the spectrum, but leave you all the blue.

BTW: I have the same 'Classroom Spectrometer' - it's invaluable at $35!

How much intensity do you loose by using these sheets?

How well do the sheets hold up to heat?
What is their lifespan?

tree6,

You can still use the stock glass and the brackets, but it requires a little bit of mod work on it. If you are handy, you can do it. I did it for my first 30g tank. And it worked great, even was able to hang it from my ceiling and it looked decent. Like I said, if you look up the Regents mod and it should tell you how to do everything!

I'm still studying the lifespan of the sheets, but in a fluerescent situation. I would suggest you get a few sheets, and try them out yourself.

The Regents mod is not that complicated. It involves, cutting the bracket to fit a 150w MH and then a little work on the ceramic holders, then just wiring up the new ballast, it took me about 45 min to do the first one, and about 20 to do the 2nd.
