Yeah, they're usually kind of boring. I got those from Keys Critters as a special order. I've got three in the tank, but that's the only one that wants to cooperate with the picture taking.

Wow, Greg those are the best pictures I think I have ever seen, such great quality!!! Would it be ok if I saved some of these onto my computer just for personal reference and enjoyment? If that's possible anyways.

first off... WOW!
awesome set up! good work! inspiring!

secondly, i have a lighting question for you...
is the 400W MH enough to cover the 3' width?
how high are the lights off the water/top of the tank?
what type of reflectors are you using?
do they have to be run parallel?

i'm asking cuz i am moving this summer and i am toying with the idea of upgrading my 180 to a 250 (6'x3'Wx2'H).

i do not want to run any supplemental lighting. how are you finding those 10ks? white? or do they need actinics?
what type of ballasts are you using?

TIA.

Greg, you certainly have a talent for taking pictures along with keeping reefs.

The setup looks awesome and I can't wait to see the rest of the pics. My 280, which will be setup in June, will also be barebottom. It will have around 60X turnover. I can't wait to see the flow. What skimmer are you running? What is it rated for? Also, what is the 6" pvc by your sump for? I'm guessing it will be for a UV unit.

Sure. As long as it's for personal use, enjoy them any way you'd like,

They are only 175W, but with spider reflectors they cover 3' perfectly.

Quote:

The MH's are at about 10"

Quote:

spiders

Quote:

The are running perpendicular.

I would go with 20K's if I weren't going to suppliment. I have 8 VHO actinics running alongside the MH's

All Icecap.

No problem.

Thanks.

I'm running a MyReef MR-6 (I think it's rated for 1500gal?)

The 6" PVC is a spacial placeholder for the UV so I don't forget and put any equipment in the way.

MR6 and I thought my MR3 was big.

Very nice job Greg. I love the way you did the addition. I think the tank has some JI, {Jerel influence}.

I like your lighting idea also. My lighting was supplemented 175w 10K Germans on Icecaps. I sold all my 400w equipment and purchasing the same for my new tank.

Ok, it's Monday morning, so back to business. Here's attempt #1 of the aquascaping. Remember that the goal with a bare bottom tank is to put as little contact point of the rock as possible on the bottom. You want the current to blow the detritius out from under the rocks.

Greg,
Awesome! Just keeps getting better and better!

Question: I think you mentioned starboard in an earlier post which is what is on the bottom? What is that? Styrofoam?
Any problems with detritus getting trapped at the edges; or possibly underneath?

I'm guessing you used it for the safety of the glass as well as looks. Any other reasons? Or what do you think if you had gone completely bare-bottom?

Thanks Mark.

Samson,

Starboard is the same stuff they make cutting boards out of. It doesn't absorb nutrients and it protects the glass bottom from breakage.

I have a lot of other barebottom tanks and I didn't bother with the starboard because I don't have big rocks up high in them. For this one I thought it was mandatory for safety sake.

I started thinking about this tank in August of 2003. Real designs starting meeting paper in October and it got wet in February. Saturday I hosted the local reef club meeting and showed it off to people for the first time.
It's not hard to make griss and Nanook look bad.

I have read through the thread, but I might have missed it, do you have any moonlights on the setup?

I am sure that Griss or Nanook will ban me for my comments.

Now I just need to remember where we put the ban button

No, I don't have moonlight set up. I may add that some day, but it's not high on my priority list.

The next day, I decided I didn't like the aquascaping above, so I redid it like this....
