Question What is a fair price for my 7 year old 120G reef tank?

Fair Price ??

I have a 120 gallon reef tank that started out as a 30 gallon and has eventually grown into the current 120 gallon reef tank. Here is the current set up:
  • 120 2' X 2' X 4' Pre-Drilled Twin-Flow corner overflow tank
  • Blank Stand came with the tank
  • Black hood to house lighting - I built
  • 2 - 250 W Metal Halide with 6-8 month old 12000K bulbs external ballasts
  • 2 65W 50/50 Power Compact lights
  • 1 65W 50/50 Power Compact
  • 6 - 1W Moon lights
  • 40 Gallon (breeder) sump tank sectioned off for filtration
  • 2 High head pressure pumps - not real expensive but powerful nearly 2500 gallons per hour
  • 2 200W heaters
  • 2+ gallons of bio-balls
  • Coralife Super Skimmer Needle Wheel Protein Skimmer - it is very efficient
  • 5 gallon tank that I put in the sump as a refugium
  • 120+ lbs of well cured very nice purple/green corline live rock
  • 100+ very live sand/crushed coral
  • Well over 20 mushrooms red/green/purple
  • Breeding pair of Bangaii Cardinals
  • Yellow Tang
  • Purple Tang
  • Huge serpant star
  • Gorgeous black and yellow striped serpant star
  • Sand sifting star
  • 6+ bubble tipped anenomes - bought one and it split about 15 times over the last 6 years - I gave away/traded 8+ anemones
  • Yellow Leather coral
  • Nice green star ployps
  • Other polyps brown in color
  • too much other stuff that has grown over the years and I am sure I am missing stuff. I will add as I remember

Now my question is how much should I ask for the entire setup? BTW the tank is in the living room and all the filtration is plumbed into the basement where the sump is located. Makes for really nice display and keeps some of the noise level down. Also makes for really easy maintainance. I am getting rid of it because I have lost some of the interest but not really. I need to cut down my electric bill so I will be downgrading to a 29 gallon Oceanic Bio-Cube. I am keeping a clownfish, anenome, six-line wrasse and dragonet.

Thanks to all in advance for responding.

Pictures would help. But I would not be to optimistic, it is VERY hard to sell a tank whole, if not impossible.

I will compile some pictures. I was afraid of that. Do you think it would be better to part it out?

Part it out. Very few people can move a 120 , set it up, and not have losses. Sell corals first followed by fish/inverts, live rock, and finally equipment.

BTW, don't forget to post prices and location. Local reefers are drawn like a moth to a flame to fair prices .

ooops, you need 50 posts and 90 days of membership to sell on RC. May I suggest Craigslist or a local clubs private forum ?

Here are some pics that I had of the tank. They are old, some of the stuff has been traded. The breeding Bangaii's are awesome. Check out the pics of the fry. I will update the pics as I take more.

In response to the 50 posts, I was one of the webmasters for one of our local fish stores up here in Upstate NY/Pittsfield MA, SwampBottom, until they went out of business so I tried to post there in order to keep membership up.

I am in no real big rush to get rid of it but wanted to see what others thought about how to get rid of it.

If you do split everything up and sell it, I would be very interested in the pair Bangaii's.

I am thinking that we will end up splitting everything up, because it will be easier to get rid of. I will keep you in mind.

As a side note if you want this pair to breed feed them live brine shrimp for a week and then they will be doing the dance. :-)

The problem with selling a Full setup is the same as trying to sell a car you hooked up, you can put thousands of dollars into a car to make it nice, but when you sell it your lucky if you get a fraction of what you put into it, same with a full setup, your better off selling everything separate, youll have more luck that way.

Yeah that makes sense. Also everyone has their own way they like to hook up their car and their fish tank.

It looks like I will be splitting it up and selling off pieces.

I just purchased the Oceanic Bio-Cube 29gallon. So I will taking some of the stuff that I like and setting that up and will be selling off the rest.

I have some really nice live rock and lots of it. How does that usually sell?

Depends on your location for the rock. I purchased all mine for $3/lb off craigslist. If you sell it locally it can be from $3-$5 depending on how much people sell stuff already in your area. You want it to be 1/2 the price of the pet store basically, I know they charge $10/lb at least here.
I know I'm always stalking the 3 big craiglist within 2 hours of me for great deals. I can't pass up a bargain.

lol, but if you post on ur local reefing club for $5/lb, they can all read this thread and find out ur trying to turn $2/lb profit....but then again I guess it's more established then it used to be and stuff like that. Good luck!
