Whoops
When I built screen covers for my tank recently used some old bird netting I had in the shed. There was a small hole in one of the pieces cut, thought no big deal and left it.
Went to feed the fish when I got home from work... This is what I saw. Now mind you it could have been there anywhere from 2-12 hours depending on when it jumped but I am guessing less than 9 hours but under a 400w MH bulb it was very crispy and dry no smell of rotting which I guess was good. This shot shows the small hole and the anthias in relationship to it...guess what, without the hole of course it would not have gotten out but if the other screen had not been there it would have simply landed back into the aquarium and of course I had to try and get a better exposure being into photography and all...but these are the 'crime scene' images as found. So, now to fix the one screen and get at least one more anthias. |

What a bummer.
The odds seem so remote it makes me wonder if it saw the hole and purposely went for it, of course, not knowing the ramifications.

I have had that same thing happen but with a very small hole in the back of glass lids on the plastic. I like this idea and I think I will start on this tomorrow. Thanks for the idea and this sukx about your fish.

Wow.. Thats just the kind of luck I usually have. It's the type of thing that you couldn't make happen if you tried. What did you use to male the frame for the screen? I need to make a frame, right now I just have it stretched and taped which makes it a pita to do anything in the tank.

Man, that's too bad. How did it even fit through that hole? Sorry about your loss

Yes, the hole is only about 5 of the little openings that are about 1/2 inch each for a total length of a 2.5" hole!
03Mach, the screen frame material can be picked up at any home depot or lowes. I think total cost for the frame pieces and cord to hold the netting in it was $18.00. I opted to make three individual screens for each opening in the tank, making one large screen to cover the entire area would have been less materials and cheaper. |

Wow, that's pretty crazy that it found the hole. I'm wondering the same thing as Kent.

I put some food in before going to work, I heard a splash think it may have been during a feeding frenzy or chasing race for food.

Wow Kurt that's nuts. It's amazing, but it's not the only story I've heard, or seen, like that.
I had a flasher wrasse jump thru the smallest crack in between the glass covers of my old tank. Crazy. I wonder what the break in the cover looks like to a fish from below surface?

it reminds me of when I first added a flasher and a six line. one day before I went to block the canopy openings the flasher jumped out the back and the six line jumped out through the space btwn the front lip of the tank and the front of the canopy lid. It was a tiny space!!!!
