Question Help on Setup

Hello. This is my first post here and need some help. It's been a long time since I had a reef tank and I have a 40G breeder, 36L X 18W X16H, I've been thinking about setting up. I would like advice on what equipment to use.

I just moved into a new home and there is a place above the fireplace meant for a tv where it will fit - assuming it will support the weight.

I need advice on what type of lights - I'm thinking to T5s but open to suggestions.

Also, what kind of filtration system. There's not enough room for a sump and I'd like to keep it simple since I'd need a step ladder for maintenance. If I have live sand and rock plus a protein skimmer, is that sufficient? Or should I add more?

Thanks!

Well, first be absolutely sure that the place you're thinking of putting it will...with certainty...support a fish tank. It's 8-pounds per gallon of water with sand being heavy as well...as is the live rock that you'd put into it. For a 40-gallon tank without any possibility of ever putting a sump/refugium on it you'd want, IMO, at least 70-pounds of rock. That amount of rock, together with the skimmer should be fine for your "filtration"...if you keep the fish population down to a bare minimum and you feed the coral only what they need.

Since you won't be able to have a sump with a refugium, be certain that you buy the very best hang-on skimmer that's out there and be sure to use RO/DI water to fill the tank and for all the water changes.

I'd say that you should be fine with those considerations and since there will be no sump/refugium, a bit more attention to details may be in order but nothing that would keep you from enjoying that reef. Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Avi - Do you have any recomendations on skimmers? I've been looking at the Coralife needle wheel one. I was also talking to the owner of a lfs and he recommended adding a bio-wheel filter as well.

First of all, if you're going to have a good skimmer, there's no need...at all....for a bio-wheel. I don't have a clue as to why he'd tell you that. As for the skimmer,I can't recommend one from personal experience because I've never used a hang-on type skimmer but I have Aqua-C EV-180's and I'm very happy with them....Aqua-C makes the Remora Pro and that might be a good one for you...Most likely others who have experience with hang-ons will pipe in...otherwise, post the question in a separate thread and there'll be recommendations.
