If it doesn't cause excessive foaming, I would leave the air valve wide open or removed for now.
I know....I've really been struggling over the past couple of days getting everything right....and not just the skimmer. Filling tank and sump with a couple of unexpected leaks, a few oversights in my planning, the arrival of the new rock, a freakin' thunderstorm that knocked out the power ..... 10 minutes after I got it filled. All this stuff has added up and I'm burnt out. And to top it off, my employer is sending me out of town for the next week....last minute business decision. That probably has me freaked the most since this tank just got up and running 36 hours ago. I don't like deadlines and I don't have the luxury of an extra set of eyeballs around here when I'm gone.

I guess you've all been through it. I just hope everything stabilizes before I go.

The skimmer looks like it has found a happy spot. It's kind of foaming at the top rather than just a water/bubble level. Adjust ment tube and wedge pipe are wide open right now. Not sure how to proceed. I guess I should just leave it there for a few days till I get back on friday.

But really, I'm not sure of what to look for when it's adjusted correctly. I've searched for stuff written about it, but came up with nothing.

I do appreciate the help I've gotten here though.

If you are away, you want it set dry (low level). Once things settle in, you want it so the dense bubbles break into large bubbles and pop ~ 1/3 - 1/2 way up the inside of the cup. The brown coating should be in the upper 1/2 of the inside of the neck that is inside the cup.

Well right now, the bubbles are right where you explained and there is a brown coating forming right in line with the bottom of the cup. Both adjustments are wide open right now. I imagine it is adjusted about as dry as it can get...unless I pull off that little valve on the tubing. Even though it's all the way open right now, I would guess it's causing some restriction.

I don't understand how the two adjustments work. Is one a coarse and the other a fine adjustment?

On brand new skimmers, it's always best to start breaking in the skimmer with the air slightly restricted. This is why I made that recommendation to jdjeff in my earlier post. As the skimmer breaks in completely, the air valve is usually opened more and more until either wide open or completely off. When the air is restricted, one must adjust the exhaust return pipe starting at no restriction and see where the bubble level is within the skimmer. If too low, then close down the exhaust to raise the bubble level. I always get my air adjustment first, then compensate with the exhaust adjustment.

MarkandKristen: If it works better with it off for you then leave it off =) Depending on how long your skimmer has been running you may want to clean the venturi too.

ER Tec1, glad to have someone from ER on board to help with specific problems. I've seen so many misinformation given by hobbyists to a stressed out ER owner, it's great to see someone from the company service owners with proper information. Thanks.

edit - Have ER consider openning up a sponsored forum again, so everyone has a specific forum to post questions and reviews?
