Canopies
Can anyone tell me the benefits of owning a canopy? Are they necessary??

It all depends on personal preference and what type of lighting you plan to use on the tank really. Canopies allow you to conceal the top of the tank and match it with the stand, you can retrofit your lighting into the hood and conceal your equipment (ie: pipes, wires, etc). They also help keep the top of the tank out of reach from animals/people and also help in keeping fish from jumping out (provided the back is sealed as well).
There are other options though, such as satelite/orbit's which either hinge onto the sides of the tank or hang from the ceiling.

They really only serve the purpose of hiding your light fixture and making the top look better. But if you have something like a pendant they are useless. Its just a way of making the tank look better.

I do not have a canopy on my 90g. You can see the light fixture, but I am okay with that.

go for the canopy but then you maybe need a chiller because it will store heat even if you place fans the temp goes up a little. So i would recomned getting a chiller and a canopy looks nice and conceals the light so it does not escape into you room were the tank is. That is the biggest reason i got a canopy because of the light escaping into the room it was driving my wife crazy

No light spillover.
A place to put fans. You can put fans over a open top, but it looks ghetto |
