Fwiw, when my tank had both southdown and crushed coral, most of the sand sleeping wrasses were sleeping in the crushed coral area.

I use that Reef Floor Special Crap! My three Leopards are doing great.

I also think they are happier in 2"-3" of sand. They dive into the sand at night pretty quickly. I think they may hit the bottom of the tank if the sand is too shallow.

all sand burying fish are "happier" in deep sand, but an inch will be perfectly fine to keep one healthy. In the wild most sand dwellers will bury 6-15" in the sand... I've tried to dig one up once i went atleast a foot and still didn't find that sneaky bugger.

Theres also the possibility that it could feel vibration, and dug deeper because you were trying to get him.

That being said, 2 or 3" and they seem to do fine.

No. I have been using CaribSea Special Grade Reef Floor for years. It is by far my favorite sand to use in a reef tank.

That's because they usually burrow sideways under the sand after they dive. If you sit and wait, you'll often see it pop up somewhere else.

pnsnowboard- the fish in that pic is a male M. meleagris. The earspot is used to differentiate it from the very similar M. ornatus .

i know they dive sideways. I dug in about a 5 foot radius and still didn't find it. I skimmer the whole area with the net at about 6" deep. It was a red coris wrasse. They dive deep at night and sideways to hide during the day.

Ok now you guys have got me excited about these! I have been thinking about keeping one in my tank for a while now. I was thinking about ordering a Biparatus on the internet. Do you think if I emailed them and asked them to put sand in the shipping bag it would arrive healthy?

Also, when I put it in the display tank, could I try to get it started on live blackworms? How easy do these guys take to frozen? I'm concerned because I don't have a sump/refugium and don't culture pods either.

Thanks and great pics!

Torno,

For the best success, your tank should have a good amount of micro fauna for the fish to feed on until it starts eating prepared foods. I fear that a bare tank would spell doom for the fish.

Mine took to mysis in a week or two and pellets in a month. It had pods and all kind of stuff to eat in the meantime.
