Sand toxic

What makes the sand go toxic. How do you avoid it. How do you know its is happening?

In some cases, sand can build up hydrogen sulfide, which then can be released if the sand is disturbed. That's the only issue I can recall for sand. An inch or so of sand should be relatively safe, for example.

Add some sand shifters. There are starfish and snails that will keep the sand healthy. Sorry, but I can't remember which ones!

Hi Tech,

The cure in any depth bed is to keep the bed active with micro sand bed stirrers. These are the worms, mini seastars and mini-cukes that come with good quality LS. Over time they tend to die off so adding a detrivore kit or additional LS is a means to replenish them. They also help consume that detritus and render it less of a problem. I add about 1/4 inch of new LS every year to an established DSB.
