Sand toxic
What makes the sand go toxic. How do you avoid it. How do you know its is happening?

Overfeeding can create a mess. A good sandbed has enough bacteria to break down spare food that lands on it. If overloaded, it can't.
Personally I don't stir the sandbed because I don't want to break up the layers of bacteria down there. You'll see bubbles rise as nitrogen gas escapes back to the surface, the final product of breakdown...and this goes on a lot. I do have nassarius snails and conchs that work the subsurface [burrow] so that they 'spot-clean' any area that may need it, without doing much to disturb the sandbed's healthy activity.
