Hi there,
There seems to be a general consensus on about 1-2lbs of live rock per gallon of water in the aquarium. The metric doesn't really make sense to me. Wouldn't a better metric be the amount of life rock per inch of fish?

I thought it was inches of fish per gallon?

Not only does 1-2 lbs of live per gallon make a good filter, it also looks nice. The higher number is usually the maximum that will fit in a tank without making it look like a box full of rocks. Less than the lower range and nitrate reduction is not as good. And then there's always the DSB option for filtration/bio-diversity but that's another subject.

Not everyone who has a reef tank also has fish. Or some people only have one or two fish. You may want to keep mainly corals and other invertebrates. So if you are just trying to figure out how much live rock it will take to fill your tank to an asthetically pleasing level as well as provide filtration, then pounds per gallon is a good metric.
