I have been experimenting with different thrust washers, some not only stop ware on the red cap but also produce less friction and help with normal operation.

so far of all the ones i have tested i like the nylatron ones the best. wish mcmaster had them in the right size. Im also trying to find a varient of it called "nylatron nsm"

Material Notes: Nylatron NSM is the premium bearing and wear nylon product available today. Solid lubricant additives impart self-lubricating, high pressure/velocity and superior wear resistance characteristics. This wear resistance is delivered without either start-up or running lubrication making it ideal for bearings, gears and wear pads. It is a proprietary type 6 nylon formulation produced using Quadrant EPP's Monocast process. Nylatron NSM was developed specifically for demanding applications where larger size parts are required. In wear applications, Nylatron NSM lasts up to 10 times longer than standard Type 6 nylon.

So the Octura 1435 has more flow than the Nitro Hammer props? I see the Nitro has a deeper pitch but the 1435 is larger in diameter. Does anybody know for sure which has more flow?

Thanks

The Octura has much much more flow than the nitro.
more aggressive picth and a larger diameter will do it every time

Has anyone hook up a maxijet mod on a UPS battery backup?

My power went out the other day and the UPS could not get the maxijet mod running. It just stutters. No problem running the stock maxijet though.

Fatcow,

I run a APC 1200 UPS and plug my MJ1200 w/3004 Dumas prop into it. Tested it and it runs fine, not perfect has a little bit of chatter to it when running on battery but does the trick. BTW I use the thrust washer from MJMods on my Maxistreams maybe thats making the difference.

This is because the crappy (ie. APC) UPS units use an abbreviated sine wave as opposed to a true sine wave.

The high end UPSs use a true sine wave just like wall power.

I have a modified MJ 600 running on a Best Power true sine wave UPS and it runs great. I get about 6 hours of run time.

Should I use the medium flow Octura 1435 mod kit or the high flow Dumas 3004 on my 46 gallon bowfront?
Is there a big difference b/w the two?
Thanks, Alan.

There is a big difference between the two. The DUmas 3004 is probably too much for a 46 gal. If u have a DSB it will get blown around. I would just friction fit the props on and see what works best for you before using glue

Good idea. And yes I do have a DSB. I see now that the Mod package comes w/ both props...cool. Thanks, Alan.

I just finished putting together my kit from mjmods. I used the carbon rod and sleeve because it had the best fit. I glued it to an old mag float I had. It seems to be a little noisy. It just hums loud and every once in a while it will hum louder for just a second. The magnet makes the noise a little bit louder but not much. Any ideas?

By the way, the mod looks awesome and pushes alot of water. kudos to mjmods.

the hum is a vibration or imperfection in the build of it. the carbon fiber flexes and that is why most people dont use it. something is slightly off.

One of mine does the exact same thing. I pulled it apart and found that the magnet was not perfectly round, and the hole through the center of it was also not perfectly round.

I scraped the glue off the magnet, and reguled it to the shaft, being more careful to center it. The noise got a little better, but it still does what you describe.

IMO the imperfection in the magnet causes it to wobble slightly, the wobble builds up then I hear the vibration, then it goes back to working properly. It's a cycle that goes every few minutes.

Thanks for the replies. Should I get a new impeller and try it again?

That's what I was planning to do. Pull the impeller assembly out and roll the magnet across a table edge or something and see how true to round it is, then go from there.

I went ahead and let mine run, and it seems to have gotten quieter after about 10 days of breaking in.. hehe it may be that I've just gotten used to it though.

As someone who is going to be doing this mod. Is 2 of the MJ 1200 mods going to be too much flow for a 75 gallon at what could be nearly 4000gph? Currently I have 2 Seio 1100s and have no sandstorms. TIA

Yes 2 MJ1200 running the large Dumas 3004 propellers will be too much for a 75g.

You can use smaller propellers like the Octura 1435 instead.

Mjmods have stainless steel rods that are the same diameter as the rods used in a store bought maxijet. Why use the carbon rod when the identical Steel rod diameter is available

Not sure if this question is for me but I thought it might be since I said I was using the carbon rod. I tried the carbon rod second just to see if it was any quieter. It was a tighter fit but just as loud as the other rod. I think it is my impeller.

I just did 3 of these mods yesterday and was wondering how silent can they be made? I used the steel shaft with flex tubing mod, and nylon washers, and made sure that the magnet when mounted does not come into contact with the sides of the housing. The first attempts were pretty loud, but now I can get it to just a bit louder than a Tunze 6080. It is going to have to make some noise, but how quiet can it be made?

Also, I tried a build where the centering brace was behind the propeller. I remember seeing that previously, but was wondering if anyone has had one running for some time and noticed any appreciable wear on the shaft or the brace?
