Yellow Tang Attacking My Cleaner Shrimp
My cleaner shrimp recently molted and I noticed that its antenna started to look like they were bent. I thought that it may of had something to due with the molting process, until my buddy and I witnessed the yellow tang bite its antenna! It must have happened several times, because the once long antenna are now are now only between 1 - 2 inches long. The cleaner shrimp used to frequently clean the tang and they got along well. Is there a reason why the tang would suddenly attack a cleaner shrimp?

Yellow tangs are known for being aggressive, sounds like you have a really agressive one their.

the antenna will grow back when it molts again.
I've read that feeding large amounts of nori will help with aggression in tangs give it a try. |

I can't see why the fish would decide to be aggressive towards a shrimp all of a sudden. I'm thinking that the tang was just curious about a potential morsel. Can you describe the fish's behavior when you saw it bite the shrimp? Did it make a display or threaten with its tail spine? Was the tang agitated? If not, I'd just assume that aggression wasn't a factor.

The tang has been acting a little more aggressive than it used to. I've noticed the tang trying to boss my marine betta around, even though it's almost twice as big. The only thing that I could come up with that could spark a behavior change like this is a food issue. I recently had excessive algae growth when I switched to 10k MH bulbs from 20K. Of course the tang loved it, but I decided to get an lawnmower blenny and 5 extra turbo snails to get rid of all the algae. There is still plenty of algae on the rockwork, but the blenny cleared off a lot of the tangs old grazing spots. The tang started to become more aggressive over the last week as the tank appeared to be cleaner. So it could be a food/tasty morsel issue. But I was also curious about why it would become aggressive after being peaceful for a few months. Thanks for the help.

The tangs increase in aggression towards the shrimp could be due to the shrimp's recent molting. After molting they are obviously still soft and very vulnerable, the tang could have sensed the recent molt (chemically, physically) and may have taken the oppurtunity to take a bite at the soft defenceless chrimp. Just an idea, but it is peculiar that he is more aggressive after the addition of the blenny and snails though.
