Maybe a Mantis

Just added snails and hermits today. Tonight, I hear a pop, pop, pop, then nothing. Ten minutes later, pop, pop, wait, then pop. Each time I have walked over to the aquarium and not seen anything, not even a cracked shell. Unsure of what's going on, but I have my suspicions.

Do mantis' take 4 months to emerge? I mean, my rock cured at the lfs for over 3 months. It's been in my tank for 3 weeks with reasonably stable parameters. Now this creature emerges? Don't know what to think.

I may make myself a coke bottle trap tomorrow and just see what the cat drags in.

Peace

Kevin

They can hide for long periods of time from what Ive seen from posts on this site. Ive also seen many build traps and catch nothing. My advice is to keep an eye on the tank, eventually he will show himself. Getting him out is a whole other adventure.

Just don't watch the video that they posted on a thread last night. I had a nightmare last night that all of my hermit crabs were destroyed by a mantis shrimp to music!

I have 1 in my tank also and I cant find him. I have tried many times durning the day at night and I cant find him. I hear him everyday though. And he loves star fish and other little shrimps. lol Do those suckers swim? If I put a glass cup in the tank for some food, if he goes in there can he swim out?

I posted this on another thread a few days ago. It is most likely the one being referenced.

I just love posting this. I originally saw this link on another forum.

Can that thing can come in on a rock? Good Lord. He ate that crab and just spit out the hard stuff, eww. Poor crab. I'd have nightmares too.

LOL, first you should find out if it is a mantis. Could be snails hitting on the glass, or a pistol shrimp hitchiked. Good luck if it is a mantis, you should set him up his own tank. They are fun to watch, evil little critters. Might find all kinds of cool things in a bottle trap.

I have heard a clicking noise the past couple of weeks too. Just 2 clicks at the most when it happens though. After watching that video I'm praying that it's a pistol shrimp!

I found a mantis, a big crab, a huge flatworm and two chitons nearly ten months after adding the last piece of rock to my tank. I have no idea how these things hide so well, for so long, but they do. I guess it's just part of the adventure of having LIVE rock!!

If I had the cash to start up a second tank, I'd do it. Great object lesson for parishoners.

"I am going to show you the devil. . ." (drop astrea snail into the tank and wait for all hell to break loose.)

Ah, the thought of it. ;-)

Peace

Kevin
