Hydor Koralia pumps and wavemakers

Has anyone out there had experience using Hydor Koralia pumps with a wavemaker? I am considering getting 4 of the Hydor Koralia 1 pumps and one of the Red Sea Wavemaster Pro wavemakers. I talked to someone at Hydor and they said they don't officially support Wavemakers and that the warranty doesn't covery any damage incurred by use with a wavemaker. He did say that he had heard of people having luck with them though. Any suggestions?

I've heard that they don't do well if they are shut off/then on completely. I have heard that if you have a wavemaker with the option to turn each powerhead down (not off) that they have better long term results. I have no evidence of this other than what I have read. Personally I keep mine on 24 hours a day and run MJ's on a wavemaker to supplement.

I have Koralias 4's ( 2 ) used in a 160, they blow like monsters. I like them, for the price that you pay. Its wide, my corals seem happy and many times I see my fish catching a wave to let loose.

Does anyone have suggestions for what powerheads work well with wavemakers such as the Wavemaker Pro from Red Sea?

get 4 sureflow modded maxi jets, they do great with RS wave makers. korilas will get stuck to much with starting and stopping, even with the red seas soft start.

You can only use a Seio controller as a wavemaker for Koralias due to the PHs power being alternated from 40% to 100%.
By the way K1s don't give out much flow. How big is your tank.

I would. They have better control with flow control knob and duckbill for dirrection control. If you want a koralia then use it for flow control. Look here for flow in your reef tank.

with a 150g you will need quite powerful PHs. The K1s would have made hardly any impact.

Would 4 Modded 1200 Maxijets give me enough punch?

I have the 2 koralias, and they are set on timers that I bought from Ikea for 6 bucks for a 2 pack.

Works great, I have the koralias going on and off along with some crappy pumps. I havent had any problems with them yet.

Time interval between on and off is 5 mins on, 15 mins off.

I stopped it though, because the clicking sound started to annoy me.

This is what I use and I love it.

Better built than the Seio controller and you can get it as a 4 plug or 6 plug configuration.

Best of all ....$60 !!!

wavemakers like red sea are just an on and off timer. Starting the pump is the most stress on the impeller. Your basically going from 0 to over 3000 rpm. Try starting your car 100-200 times a day. something is going to give.
I used the seio controller since it came out and has worked well but need more flow so when to 1500 seio instead of Koralia

I use something similar to the controller that jackfrost uses, here and you can get it for 30 bucks, I control 2 Koralia's and 2 Maxi Mods on it, I usually run it in 2 channel mode which turns the pumps on at one side of the tank then turns the other side on, or you can run it in 4 channel mode which shuts each pump off and on independently. The Koralia's clank once in awhile but not too bad.

That should be plenty of flow. Here is another maxi mod kit that seems to have a lot of happy customers.
